Thy3A result - wait on follow up scan and FNA

I went to my GP in March with a lump on my neck.  She referred me to ENT and I saw a consultant 2 weeks later.  I then had a scan and FNA  on 9 April.

I got a phone call from the Consultant to explain the result of the scan was U3 and the  FNA results would mean that she was recommending a partial thyroidectomy.  I queried was that a definite, what was the timescale etc.  she said that was almost certainly the recommended next step, that it would be discussed at at thyroid multi-disciplinary meeting and she was referring me to a Neck Surgeon.

i had appointment with a surgeon on 30 April who said I would not be having surgery but would have a 3 month review with an appointment no later than end of July.  When I said that I understood that surgery would be happening he was very dismissive - thyroid lumps are very common etc etc and my result didn’t even warrant a discussion at multi-disciplinary meeting.

I then revived a letter sent by Surgeon to GP confirming the U3 and Thy3A result but have heard nothing further.

I was then told today by the appointments line that they are currently 6-7 month delay on appointments so people who should have been seen in January for three months review are being seen in July.

On that basis I might not get my follow up scan until February, 12 months after first discovering the lump.

Obviously I am concerned, I have tried phoning the Surgeon’s Secretary but it goes to a recorded message and tells me for follow appointments to contact the Appointments line.

Has anyone else waited this long with a Thy3A result and if has anyone decided to go privately for follow up scan and FNA, if you can you could give me an idea  of cost as I have no private health insurance.

  • Hello

I am Brian one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community. I have just noticed your post has gone unanswered. I can't answer it myself as I have a different cancer however by me replying your post will be "Bumped up" to the top of the page and I hope seen and answered by other members of the group.

I think you should at least be contacting PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) at your hospital to see if they can help. Here's a link you may also find of help:

    Raising-your-voice-toolkit.

I do hope you can make some progress.

    Best wishes - Brian.
