Tall cell varient papillary thyroid cancer

Hello.

I was told last week the pathology from my partial thyroidectomy has come back as tall cell varient and they want to remove the other side of my thyroid next month with my lymph nodes.

I have researched and know it can be more aggressive and a poorer prognosis but I really would rather avoid surgery again as it was horrible a couple of months ago.

Has anyone any experience of this type of cancer? Could I take a monitoring approach?

Hey! I'm on the boob journey, but I've seen that people reply to unanswered posts so that it gets bumped up and seen by more people!

Replying in the hope it gets your message to someone who can relate and advise xx

  • Hi

I was diagnosed with 50% tall cell papillary thyroid cancer in February 2022.  My thyroid was removed along with some lymph nodes on the right side of my neck.  The primary tumour was only 4.5 mm but had already spread to lymph nodes.  I then had radioactive iodine treatment.
My advice is to have the surgery - I am pretty sure that would be what my oncologist would say.  I am being cared for by the brilliant team at Addenbrookes in Cambridge.
Tall cell variant is more aggressive and it is more likely to recur.  It is also more likely to become resistant to radioactive iodine treatment.
    Good luck !

    and each time

  • Thank you,  there is little to no help, advice ect on Anaplastic thyroid cancer.

  • Thank you for bumping this for me xx

  • Thank you gold finch. I am sorry you have been through this too. It's hard to get my head around, the research seems to all lean towards removal and treatment. I know I have had this a year at least now but I have struggled with recovery from my partial thyroidectomy in November and just feel like it's like going back to square one again.

  • There seems to be little help out there. Did you have a full thyroidectomy ?
