Good afternoon,
I've just found out I need a completion thyroidectomy then RAI. Can I ask how long after a completion thyroidectomy you had your RAI? I forgot to ask, but wanting to start making a plan for Christmas/work.
Thank you.
Hey, I had total thyroidectomy on 15th September and RIA on the 14th February!
They aim to do within six months of surgery.
Hi, I had my full thyroidectomy on the 15th of April and then had my RAI on the 13th June, so not long at all for me. I’m in the Brighton area and am 24. Could vary depending on the area and also what dose you have, as I had the smaller dose I didn’t have to stay in hospital. Hope this helps and I’m here if you ever want a chat
Hi , I had my completion thyroidectomy in Jan 2024 and RAI 18/06/2024. I had the 3.7 dose and stayed in for 6 nights as my levels dropped very slowly. I felt very nauseous from the injections and the tablet itself and found it difficult to eat .
my experience doesn’t seem typical and I was told 3 nights stay initially. I was very fatigued following but that again seems variable. The stay itself was fine except for the nausea and they offered me medication. With hindsight I should have asked for something stronger! I went in prepared for the longest stay and friends and family could FaceTime me.
Came in the 6 Nov got blood taken for thyroglobulin I think that is what it’s called. Then got my pill transferred in a metal box and a long straw is attached to allow for tipping and keeping away from skin. As signed up for Aspire got a gamma scan which was one each day and last day a forty minute full body scan. Soon as I took the pill I was checked on the gender counter for radiation. This was monitored daily. Second day I got more bloods taken which filled four sample bottles. It looks like my radiation is dropping as planned. First day no symptoms. Second day a bit nausis and sore shoulders and knees like after Op. I did not sleep well and had issues with maintaining my body temperature.
The third day scans I can be more exact now. I first got a gamma scan from head to toe, I then got the same gamma scan of my head area as previous days then I was moved to take a CT scan of my head/chest area. I was out the hospital on discharge by 11.30am.
