RAI treatment centres

I need to have RAI but the wait list at my nearest hospital is several months long. So I am looking for other treatment centres which might have a shorter wait time.

Does anyone know if there is a list of RAI treatment centres in UK?

I would also be interested to hear peoples’ experiences of the isolation rooms used. E.g. are the rooms in some centres better than others for facilities, ventilation & temperature control?

  • Hello, I posted under recovery and getting used to thyroxine re RAI treatment.

I was stressed waiting for a slot and didn’t get referred for 2-3 months after completion surgery. My anxiety was through the roof.

unless you ask to be referred to a large Thyroid cancer unit I think there isn’t much choice. I live in Essex and there is only one NHS room available as far as I am aware.

  • Hi I am due to have mine at Weston Park I  had to wait 5 week after my meeting with my Oncologist  I cannot comment on the temperature or ventilation of the room but the information sent to me was very thorough and informative, there is 2 rooms and they both look quite comfortable, I have to have my injections at the start of the week and then be admitted on the Wednesday and stay two nights. Hope this helps!

  • Hi, gosh 5 weeks sounds good. Is that at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield?

  • Yes it is, maybe check with your cancer support nurse whether you can request a specific hospital?

  • I would suggest to contact Kate at Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust up in Newcastle. She will probably know where all the RAI rooms are and may be able to advise you about whether you can go somewhere other than your local hospital.

Keep in mind that when you leave the hospital you will be radioactive and you need to think very seriously about how long you can be in a car or on a train without putting other people at risk from your radiation. This may limit how far you can travel.

    Best wishes
