RAI and injection side effects

Hi everyone,

I‘m due to start my RAI on 24th Jan. I’m mainly feeling nervous about being away from my 2 little children, but i think I’d better also think about how I might feel! Thought this would be a good place to ask questions!

I read somewhere that the injections they give in the 2 days prior to the radioiodine can cause nausea/vomiting…is this true? Nobody has mentioned that to me and I have to drive quite far on my own to get there each day. Has anyone had any side effects from the injections?

I know the RAI itself can also cause nausea - will they automatically give me anti sickness medication or is this something I can ask for?

Also, the documentation I’ve been sent says there will be a tracer scan 3-6months later and that I may have to come off the levothyroxine for 4 weeks…is that always the case?

Thanks so much and hope you are all doing ok wherever you’re at at the moment. X

  • Hi

my experience of RAI was without any issues. I felt fine the whole time. The thyrogen injections were fine, no reaction.
im not sure why you might need to come off levothyroxine at all - that is the point of thyrogen injections.
I’m not a medic but have had RAI twice.
    good luck!

  • Hi, I had RAI done last October. I'm pretty prone to nausea so I asked my Oncoligist for anti nausea tablets before the injections just in case but I didn't need them, I felt fine, just a bit sleepy. If you're concerned I'd recommend asking for  anti nausea tablets now so you have them with you like I did.

I haven't heard of the scan you mention. I'm just having an ultrasound tomorrow and haven't been asked to change my Levothyroxine dose at all.

Good luck, hope,it goes well for you.

  • Thank you! Good to hear you had no reaction…I’m hoping the same!

Its definitely just the injections this time but says I might have to come off the meds next time…a bit bizarre…like you I thought the injections meant that wasn’t necessary…I think everywhere operates slightly differently which I find very confusing.

    thanks again and take care!

  • Thank you for replying…I’m also really prone to nausea so it’s reassuring to hear that doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll have a reaction. I’ll call them this week to ask for anti nausea tablets just in case.
thank you and hope you’re doing ok

  • You're welcome, just keep sipping water or lemonade after you've had the RI tablet. I found that helped me to keep nausea or heartburn at bay as well as helping to flush the radioactivity out of my body as quickly as possible.

Take lots to do with you too, books etc. I watched A LOT of daytime antiques hunting and quiz shows on the TV in the room!

  • I’m anticipating a lot of daytime TV!! I have to move out of home because I have 2 very little children so I need to keep myself distracted from missing them. Although it’ll be nice to get some proper sleep for a change!!

How did your ultrasound go today? Hope all looked ok Slight smile

  • I'm sure they'll miss you too, you'll get a lovely welcome home from them! Are you going to stay somewhere other than home for a few days after the RAI too while the radioactivity subsides?

The scan went well today, thanks, very thorough, I ended up with gel on my chin and hair! The same person did the scan as did my original one when I first found the lump and had told me then that it definitely wasn't cancer.  They apologised for getting it wrong today.

  • I’m so glad they apologised…that must have been so hard to be given reassurance then find out the opposite.
