Waiting time for results

Hi

I had a lobectomy nearly 11 weeks ago. Had an appointment 6 weeks later for results of blood tests and pathology report on my thyroid. On tablets for low levels but he didn't have the results of pathology, said they had to send it to Swansea for a second opinion.

He said not to worry, to be in all fairness, I was ok about that, but nearly 5 weeks later, they still haven't got back to me. I rang on week 8, the secretary got back to me, saying they haven't come back yet and now I am on week 11, no news. I've made numerous phone calls, just to get some feedback but not one call back. Which to be honest is quite frustrating as the lady told me she would ring me as soon as I rang her.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same wait for their results and the same with no one ringing back with any sort of feedback? Originally the original biopsy came back hurthle cell neoplasm. Thank you for any feedback

  • Hello Bonesy

I hope you do not mind me replying as I had a different kind of cancer to you but I do remember the waiting for results. It was tough and I had to chase them several times. It must be really frustrating to be waiting 11 weeks and still not knowing.

One thing I did that helped move things along was to do an Online Consultation with my GP. He was able to look at my records and reports from the hospital and was able to contact the consultant directly. Some results had been sent directly to my GP via the internal NHS system, that had not yet been sent to me. My GP was able to chase things up and get me an appointment the following day with the consultant.

It may be worth doing this, particularly as it has been so long and that Swansea is also now involved.

Hopefully someone who has had a similar procedure will now see you post and respond but I do recommend contacting your GP to get things moving.

    Good Luck

    Jane

  • Thank you. It's not confirmed it's cancer yet, hopefully it's not and if it is, my consultant seemed happy with how the op went. I never thought of contacting my own GP and asking him if he could have a look. Thank you.

It is a frustrating wait and might be things that are out of my consultants hands but it would be nice if I had a call back of them.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions

  • I hope you get some good results soon and fingers crossed for you.

  • I waited 6 weeks (Falkirk) for the pathology results of my thyroid lobectomy in Sept 23. I had initially been told 2/4 weeks and those extra weeks dragged. Waiting for news and the next stage of the NHS is not great.

Unfortunately it did turn out to be thyroid cancer and I had the completion thyroidectomy in early Nov.  Results of that were much quicker I.e 3 weeks and also showing some tumours.  Radioactive iodine treatment due in late Jan 24.

  • Sorry to hear you have thyroid cancer. I had my results last Friday, thankfully it was good news. He said it took a while because of a lot of inflammation. Basically it was ok. I hope you are ok. Thank you for replying to my post

  • Glad you had good results after all that time. I think you have the record for the longest wait I have seen on this site! I hope you can start to move on from this experience. Stay well

  • Lol ye it was a bit of a wait. Glad it's over now. Thank you so much for reply. Take care
