Hello there. A few years ago I found a lump on my neck. After an ultrasound I was reassured that it was a normal looking thyroid nodule. Fast forward to 2023, after asking to get it checked again, I was told the appearance of the nodule had changed, and so I needed to have it removed for a biopsy it. However, as I was heavily pregnant I needed to wait. I had my beautiful baby boy, and shortly after having him (when my baby was just 4 weeks old) I had the first op for my hemi-thyroidectomy. Results from that came back that it was in fact Follicular Thyroid Cancer. I was then in for second operation to remove the whole of my thyroid. It's been a complete whirlwind of a year. I'm due to have the next step of treatment - Radioactive Iodine treatment in a few weeks. I wondered if anyone on here has had RAI, how they found it and how life is after the operation(s)/RAI? Some days I feel worried due to the fact I've always been "healthy" - good diet, exercise lots, and I have never had any thyroid issues before. It's a worry that my body made and grew cancer cells. I know this is probably part of the process and it'll just take time to trust my body again. x
First of all congratulations on your beautiful baby boy and well done for getting through the trauma of finding out you have Thyroid Cancer, which must have come as such a shock. I have had 2 rounds of RAI, in Dec 22 and July 23 but the last round was unsuccessful for me due to being RAI resistant, the first round worked in my Thyroid region and was successful in attacking thyroid cells left over from the op. The second round was intended to reach my lungs but didn't unfortunately. I felt ok after my RAI the first one I had a couple of days with an upset tummy/feeling a bit nauseous but I was given anti sickness pills and had some of those which helped. Mainly tiredness for a while but I rested when I needed to, which isn't always that easy with a new baby, but then I am 68 now so those days are long over with. I hope you are ok and the treatment goes well for you @ElleP, drink lots of water, suck on some sour sweets and shower regularly to get rid of the radiation quickly so that you can get home to your baby quickly. Best wishes x
Hi , I had my RAI last Tuesday and I felt broadly fine. I thought to share my current experience as I also have children, 5yo and 7yo. I am finding it quite difficult to isolate from them at home, and I am glad that I made the decision to go to a hotel for a couple of nights after I left the hospital. I found it easier to be away from the kids than being at home with them but having to keep a metre away. Hope all goes well for you
