Hi I had a total thyroidectomy and radio Iodine in 2021, an ultrasound after the treatment showed some lymph nodes that were suspicious, I had these biopsied and they are cancerous, a CT scan has also showed some in my chest, things seem to take so much time and I’m terrified how far this has spread any advice would be much appreciated

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that you have recently discovered that your thyroid cancer has spread to your lymph nodes and it's natural to be worried.

As I don't have the experience you're looking for, I'm going to 'tag'  into my reply to you. She has lots of experience with thyroid cancer and may be able to give you some advice.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hello and thanks to latchbrook for the shout.

I'm sorry you find yourself in this situation. The good news is that even when thyroid cancer spreads, it usually does so very slowly and additional doses of radioactive iodine can be very effective in keeping things under control.
I've been here for nearly 13 years now and a lady I know who had metastasis way back in 2010 is STILL battling away and keeping things under control with relatively infrequent treatment.

This spread is going to be enormously worrying for you, but it shouldn't be a cause for panic. There are lots of options and your team will start with the easy ones (more RAI) and then still have other things in reserve if or when that stops doing its magic.

Talk to your team, explain how you are feeling and ask for help.

    Best wishes

    Barbara
