I had treatment for oesophagul cancer last year and am in remission, I am delighted to say, but during scans before treatment thyroid cancer was detected and I am now booked in to have the operation in October. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos disease about 5 years ago and have been on  50 gr  levroxine ever since. I have never had any problems with lethargy or weight gain, and in fact did not know I had it until a blood test  for something else.  Has anyone had this op and suffered lethargy and weight gain afterwards?

  • If you already have done so well with thyroxine for your Hashimotos, I would keep my fingers crossed that you'll do well without your thyroid after surgery.
You'll find a ton of stuff on the internet with people blaming their absent or misbehaving thyroid for all the troubles of the world. I'm not going to suggest that's not the case for some people, but it doesn't have to be that way.
Often after thyroid removal, it will take a while - a year or more is not unusual - to get on top of the right level of medication, so I won't tell you it's a quick process - but there's no reason why you can't do very well on thyroxine.

Mind you, you've already beaten a really tough cancer so thyroid cancer shouldn't be too terrible after what you already went through. I don't know if you had radiation therapy for your previous cancer, but it could be that treatment in the neck area might have triggered your thyroid issues.

    Best of luck

  • Thank you for your reply, Yes I had radiotherapy and chemo, and was lucky enough to be quite well for most of the treatment, still walking the dog 2 miles with chemo bottle attatched on treatment at home days. Now back to normal except for nerve damage to toes from chemo and very slight lung damage from radiotherapy, but nothing to slow me up much!  So glad that you are doing well after your thyroid op!

    All good wishes to you
