Update following Oncology Appointment.

Last Tuesday, 25/4 I had my Oncology follow up appointment following RAI treatment just before Xmas.  Prior to the appointment I had another CT scan with contrast dye at my Oncologist's request.  Whilst there was good news regarding take up of the iodine in my thyroid region, there are concerns that a nodule I had in my lung and was tiny has grown to 2.5 cms x 1.9 cms and I now have 2 more tiny nodules.  There is also something (they don't know what) in the lh side of my neck (I had central and rh side neck dissection previously).  I have been told after much deliberation they have decided that the team would like me to have a lung biopsy and this is to be done possibly next week if they can book me in, and a further Ultrasound on my neck.  They are unsure if the nodule in my lung is from Thyroid cells or not.  If it is then they want me to have a second round of RAI at the higher dose.  I had medium dose last time. My Oncologist did say that it is possible because of the good uptake in my thyroid region that there was no iodine left to reach the lung. I am very nervous of the biopsy to say the least but I suppose it is better to get it over and done with rather than sitting here worrying myself silly about it.

Update:  Had my Ultrasound today and everything is fine, had some lymph nodes that looked suspicious but have been told they are normal thank goodness.  Got my date for my lung biopsy on the 19th May.

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that you now need to have a lung biopsy to check on the nodules there and it's natural to feel apprehensive about it. You could pop over to the lung cancer group to ask questions about having a lung biopsy done if you feel that knowing more about it might help.

    Wishing you all the best

  • Hi Petal66

I am really sorry to read this.  It seems a lot to deal with and very upsetting to have planned surgery delayed, as well as all the understandable anxiety about your lung biopsy and what it might reveal.  Our tall cells seem to have a lot to answer for.  As you say, better to get it over and done with.
I’m due a scan, thyroglobulin test etc in the next few weeks and am hoping against hope that it will be ok.  My daughter is expecting a baby girl at the end of this month and I just don’t want to be ill.
My husband’s recently dealt with malignant melanoma seems to have worried his doctor so he awaits another biopsy and his bowel cancer symptoms seem to be increasing.

I think the only way to deal with all this is to take it day by day, understand as much as we can and try to make sure we are kind to ourselves, see the people we love and do things we enjoy.

    Take care xxxx

  • Thank you @latchbrook, I have been reading up on it  and found a leaflet online from my hospital, but a good idea to look at the other group.

  • Fingers crossed for you too @Gold Finch, stressful times waiting for results isn't it and I have only just started, this was my first Oncologist appointment after RAI, just had one before RAI with her.  I don't know what I think at the moment but have had some discomfort in the lung region in my back since before I was diagnosed, usually when walking it starts to ache and I have to slow down, and washing up it aches too.  Don't know if there is any connection or whether it is because I am asthmatic and getting older.  Sorry to hear about your hubbies problems too, enough to deal with one of us getting ill (although I feel fine apart from the ache) you wouldn't know there was anything wrong at all.  My hubby had a scare too as he developed sores on his head during lockdown so he was offered advice online without seeing anyone, just sent photos and was prescribed some cream.  He was shocked when he found out the cream was a chemotherapy cream used to treat pre cancerous cells.  It made his head awfully sore but seems to have helped and he now wears a hat whenever he goes out.  Lovely news about your daughter and not long to go now I see, I would love to see my daughter have a baby but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be right for her and her last relationship of 5 years just ended recently.  Best wishes to you and your family and I definitely agree that we need to take it one day at a time and appreciate our families and the simple things in life which give pleasure too.  Take care x

  • I did take a look and the first thing I saw was someone who suffered from a collapsed lung and haemorrhage after their biopsy and now wishing I hadn't @latchbrook.

  • Individual traumatic tales aren’t the best medicine!  Imagine if prospective mothers read lots of birth experiences, they would be completely terrified.
Best to read NHS info I think!  X

  • This was on this site @Gold Finch one of the first messages I read on the Lung Cancer site suggested I look at.  I totally get what you are saying about birth experiences though.  I have read up on it and know it can happen, as it states here on the leaflet from my hospital  "Most people have no problems. If you suddenly become short of breath or have severe chest pain, this may mean that there has been an air leak (a pneumothorax)".  It also states this can be slight or can be severe which this poor lady obviously suffered from.  Just not what I wanted to read today unfortunately.  I do only look out for legitimate online links as I know there can be some frightening things you can read which might over exaggerate things.

  • Ah, I'm sorry that happened  . Very unfortunate that the first post you should see was that one. I'm sure if you posted asking for experiences there'd be plenty of positive posts. However, I can understand if you'd rather not.

  • No worries @latchbrook it was with the best intentions and I should know by now that there are always worse cases and there is no point worrying about something that I cannot change.  Thank you for your concern it is much appreciated.
