I currently take both these drugs following two ops to remove thyroid cancer and followed these with RAI. Everything I read says to leave 4 hours between levothyroxine and lansoprazole but I’m sure my thyroid consultant said at outset that a gap of 1 hour was sufficient. What is everyone else doing to manage these medications?
I was on Calcium and Vit D after my op (still on Vit D) and I know Levothyroxine should be taken on an empty stomach, and not to eat or drink for an hour, also that you should not take Calcium within 4 hours of Levothyroxine. Not sure about Iansoprazole but I did a quick google and came up with this, it is an American site but it would seem that the suggestion is to leave 4 hours in between www.drugs.com/.../lansoprazole-with-levothyroxine-1433-0-1463-0.html
Thanks. By chance I bumped into a pharmacist today and her take is that if taking levothyroxine on an empty stomach with water then 1 hour is enough for the levothyroxine to clear the stomach. A longer gap is required if eating. Thanks for your interest and stay well.
Good to know @Langdaleman, I tend to leave it an hour and usually have coffee and then eat later. Luckily I am at home so can do that whereas someone with a busy lifestyle may not be able to. I guess your question is more about the lansoprazole interacting with the levothyroxine though, which the link I found would seem to suggest leaving 4 hours in between. I tend to wake up a lot throughout the night and can take my Levothyroxine then, which I was doing when I needed to take Calcium as that said to leave a 4 hour gap too. Now I don't need Calcium I just take Levothyroxine when I wake up and by the time I am ready it is nearly an hour gap so I can enjoy a coffee.
On the NHS website it recommends at least 30 minutes before having any food or caffeinated drinks.
I generally wake up about 5.30am then have my medication (only Levothyroxine) in bed and go back to sleep until at least 6am and then have a cup of tea (de-caff). I have been leaving 30 minutes since starting it June 2022 after operation. My blood tests have always showed it working.
