Hi everybody
I had right lobe and middle thyroid removed January 2022 and left lobe removed in march and RAI in early June all with no complications, however since September, I have had constant hoarseness and I'm always trying to clear my throat. Sometimes when I'm swallowing I feel like there's a lump in my throat. Is this normal? Has anybody else experienced this?
I'm due a follow up on the 25th, the endocrine nurse is phoning me.
Id appreciate any feedback
thanks Lily60
Just to update since medication was increased hoarseness has improved greatly.
Sorry to hear that @Lily60. I too have vocal cord problems which started before my op, but at that time I was speaking normally but couldn't always clear my throat. Since my op I can't speak as well as I did, and am constantly trying to clear mine so understand how you are feeling. In my case the cancer damaged one side of my vocal cords and it will not go back to normal and I am waiting for an operation to try and help with the voice and breathiness problems. I don't have the same problem with feeling a lump in my throat, but I did have central and rh side neck dissection so the skin is tight around that area. I hope they can find a solution to your problem and understand how frustrating it is not being able to clear your throat.
Thanks Barbaral
Im havining an ultra sound done on the 16th Feb, didnt have any problems after the ops or the RAI, this all started after the GP reduced the Levothyroxine meds, which the Endocrine nurse said the GP shouldnt have, she has put it back up. Im due to have a follow up in March.
Best Wishes
Lily
Hi Lily60,
I'm sorry to hear you're having this problem, I am as well.
My doctors were waiting until 1 year post op to see if it cleared up on it's own, but I still lose my voice very easily and get sore painful throats all the time. I get the lump you mentioned, sometimes if I'm drinking or eating I can easily choke as well if I'm not careful!
My endo has referred me to an ENT to have a look at my vocal cords to see if there was any damage in surgery. He said if so they might be able to give an injection (of Botox?) I'm not sure - might be worth asking for a referral yourself if you're still having this issue.
Best of luck, happy to keep you posted if you found this helpful
