Hey!
Back here again
I had a hemithyroidectomy back in May last year and have had my 8 month follow up US scan to check all is ok. They found something that they classed as U3, unidentifiable, so took a biopsy. Get my results this Saturday but keen to get some wisdom from this wonderful community as it’s constantly on my mind!
I vaguelt know what happens if it turns out to be cancer but does anyone know if they will have to do an MRI? If they take the final part of my thyroid out do you definitely need the RI? Or could they take it out and you don’t need the RI? Do they use the same scar to make the incision or do they make a new one? Is there a certain amount of time needed between the first and second op ie if my scar is too fresh to be reopened?
If it turns out to be benign does anyone know the rough protocol with this ie do they just leave it and monitor it every year? Do they still operate? Do they follow a different treatment path other than surgery?
I’ll obviously ask my consultant all this but any wisdom on this would be great!
Thanks!! ️

Hello Blue Skies
I’m not a medic but had surgery almost a year ago and then RI in May. I’ve more cancer so having another lot of RI very soon.
You may well have an MRI - it’s nothing to worry about.,
They will do RI if they think there is a risk there is any more cancer left.
If you need surgery they probably will use the same scar and May is probably long enough, I would have thought.
if it’s benign I am not sure but imagine they will keep an eye on you.
Try not to worry too much - I know that’s easy to say and almost impossible to do. But it achieves nothing.
I hope it goes well on Saturday, do let us know!

Hi
I had 2nd surgery 3 months after the first. The same area was used again for incision so only one scar. I haven’t had an MRI or been offered one. If you’re offered RAI I’d advise taking it, you’ll have no thyroid left and it’ll hopefully mop up any cancer in the cells remaining. The main difference I found after the 2nd surgery was the need for thyroxine, which has been ok but they do over prescribe initially which has left me struggling to sleep but this will be reduced once the RAI has been given time to work. There was no cancer in the 2nd half of my thyroid but I was glad to have it removed, it wasn’t recommended that they wait and observe even though the surgeon was sure there was no cancer prior to that second surgery. This may have been because I have the tall cell variant, I’m not sure but personally very relieved that all my thyroid has been removed. It’s easy to say but do try not to worry! Let us know how you get on.
Hello, I've gone through 2 x hemi thyroidectomy and undergoing RAI. They told me as I now have had it all out its best to have the RAI to kill off any microscopic traces that might be left and any thyroid tussle that the cancer might grow back in or be still producing hormones. I had my first half out as had follicular cancer and as I had nodulesin the other side I was given the option to take the other half out as a prevention.
Hope this helps.
Good luck xx
Hi All,
Thanks so much for your wisdom on this! Was really helpful to read.
Results came back benign so no action required. They’re just going to rescan in 6 months time to make sure nothings changed. Feel very thankful. It’s such a rollercoaster isn’t it!
thanks again!
That’s really great news! Hopefully you can relax a bit now.
Brilliant news @Blue Skies, I am so pleased for you x
