Hello newly diagnosed Follicular and so many questions

Hello all, I was only diagnosed yesterday with Follicular Thyroid Cancer which was accidentally found under a nasal scan. Since then it's been a whirlwind of tests, needles and resulted in having a left side thyroid removal. I had 5 biopsies, all along they have said, chances are it's not cancer, decided to remove half my thyroid and send off for testing as the biopsies came back negative but they were obviously were still unsure. Glad I agreed to the removal, having found out yesterday, that it was cancer.

I knew it was going to be cancer of some sort as I had lots of symptoms but as it's been such a whirlwind, in a few weeks, I haven't had time to sit down and really ask any questions. They said they caught it early and sure there is no more, think it was all caught in the one 3.2cm cyst they removed. They said they want to just monitor me over the next few years but as I had such obvious symptoms (which my Dr ignored for 4 years) I don't know how I feel about that. In the same breath, I don't know if I should be asking for further investigations into my lungs or other spread areas, should I insist on RAI, am I better asking to have whole thyroid removed. I do have other cysts on other half but been told they are fine as just fluid filled.

Any advice would be greatly received.

  • Hi.

Thyroid cancer is slow growing and as they said it's been found early I would stick to that.

Before the treatment you will have MRI and CT scans and they will show if cancer had spread anywhere else however it is really rare for it to go anywhere else. If they offer RAI you will have another scan (PET) that will further show the areas of uptake of iodine. That means all tyroid tissue (cancerous or not) will show on this scan even if it would be in bones or lungs. Again - will happen rarely. Usually only thyroid bed uptake which is expected.

Lately I can see on a group on Facebook that doctors sometimes let the patient decide what they want to do. If they give you that option do whatever you think will be best. If they though you need total thyroidectomy they would not give you that option. Hope that helps. Take care xx

  • Hi  I am pleased to see that you are now in the correct group for your cancer type. It can be very confusing until you get clear information, I am sure that you will get great support in the group.

  • Hello, thank you for taking time yo reply. The consultant didn't suggest doing any further investigations but I've said I'm not happy and requested a CT scan to check it's not spread because all the time they've told me it's not cancer but still agreed to do a PT removal then found it was cancer. Feeling very confused and stressed as its been such a battle to get here as known all along something was wrong as ticked all the symptoms.

    1. Hello, yes sorry , I posted in the lymphoma group by accident first so deleted it when I realised and moved to the thyroid group then another moderator moved me back to the FL group lol. Its so confusing being newly diagnosed but it is follicular thyroid cancer.
