I had thyroid completion surgery in January 2021 after my initial surgery in Oct 2020 which discovered papillary cancer. The cancer was contained to one side of my thyroid and I recovered well without further treatment. I had a 6 month check up on Monday and I was informed by my consultant that My last bloods (6 months ago) showed that my tsh level was above 2 and needs to be below 2. As this has been untreated for the last 6 months I am currently worried that the cancer will come back. I just hope the extra meds work. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Hello
Firstly, try not to worry. That's about as daft as me telling a panicking person to 'calm down' but it's true.
Your team shouldn't be leaving you for 6 months between blood tests - but with Covid, I'm sure it's been more common than it should be. Personally, I just call my GP and ask for a test whenever appropriate so if your team aren't pulling you in for testing more often, be sure to ask your GP to support. A blood test is needed 6-8 weeks after any change of thyroxine dose (any quicker and it won't have stabilised) or if you're feeling weird.
Most of us are told to aim for TSH about 0.1 to minimise the risk of stimulating any remaining thyroid tissue to get busy. That doesn't mean that not being that low will automatically kick off more cancer - far from it.
Try to put the TSH2 behind you and get your dose up and test in 6-8 weeks.
Most of us flop about all over the place at the beginning. It took me years to get my dose right and I still (11 years later) test roughly even 6 months or if I feel weird.
TSH going up is not due to anything your body is doing. It's just due to your dose being too low.
I hope that helps.
Best wishes
Barbara

Hi Gee, I am 4.5 years post thyroidectomy and my meds are still getting changed! It took ages for them to stabilise then I guess lifestyle changes etc has meant that my TSH was too high so they are gradually increasing it at the moment. This doesn’t mean that I have any more chance of the cancer coming back!
One day you will be where I am as I also had papillary cancer, it does stop being a constant worry!
