High TSH

Hi all - I had papillary thyroid cancer (in both sides) in 2017 and had the full thyroid removed and RAI.

My TSH has always been below 1 since then (sometimes as low 0.01) but I recently had a blood test for something else which included some thyroid bloods by chance and my TSH has shot up to 7.5. My T4 is still fairly stable at 20.

Should I be going back to my endocrinologist (who I was left in the care of after my oncologist)?

Any advice most welcome.

Thanks.

  • Hi

I'm just 'bumping' your post in the hope that someone who can share their experience of a rising TSH will see it and reply.

If you don't get any replies then I'd certainly be giving your endocrinologist a call if they are the person who is looking after you since your thyroid cancer diagnosis.

TSH going up just means you need to increase your thyroxine dose. If it's usually your endo who controls that, then ask them to give you a new prescription. If it's your GP who does it, speak to them. Once the dose goes up, wait 6 weeks for everything to stabilise and then get your bloods done again.

At TSH of 7.5 I would expect you to be feeling very sluggish, you might find your hair is feeling coarse or your skin is a bit dry. It's not a great place to be.

    Best wishes
