Hi, I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and had a total thyroidectomy and left neck dissection that showed it had spread to 2 lymph nodes. I’m booked in for a high dose radioiodine ablation in just over 2 weeks. Unfortunately I’m very anxious in hospitals despite trying various techniques my blood pressure and heart rate went so high just before the first attempt at surgery that the anaesthetist said he wouldn’t put me under until I was on medication to try and control that a bit as he felt it was too unsafe. Due to covid situation I am being admitted on the Saturday before my treatment on the Monday to start the thyrogen injections, so I have at least 5 nights in hospital. I just wondered what the rooms are like at Southampton for this as I’m a bit less anxious when I have a better picture of what to expect. Also I was told to suck on something sour every hour after the treatment to keep the salivary glands flowing and minimise any risk of damage to them, apart from lemons can anyone suggest anything else I can take in for this too?
Jo
Hi Jo, I am sorry your post has not been answered yet, so I thought I would put a link up for you with information about your stay at the Southampton University hospital HERE
It is only natural to be anxious about having to stay in hospital. I have been admitted a couple of times at the Southampton University Hospital, and have had all my treatment there. All of the medical staff I have met there have all be very helpful and supportive. I hope it all goes well for you.
Take care
Hi Jo,
not familiar with this hospital but I took my RAI as time to chill out! Watched films, face timed friends and showered a lot! If you go in with a relaxed mindset it might be easier? I sucked sherbert lemons and drank plenty of water. Also I have a sweet tooth and marshmallows and skittles are Iodine free! Lydia x
