Thyroid Cancer

Hello to you all,

I wanted to let off some steam as I am so frustrated with the level of care that I have not received since my total thyroidectomy and then RAI in January of this year.  Unfortunately my aftercare fell right in the middle of the Covid pandemic so that has not helped and has not been any fault of the hospitals and Doctors but this has caused me no end of stress.  I am under the care of Guys and St St Thomas  the operation initially had to be done twice as the cancer had spread into nearby lymph nodes.  I had the RAI in January 2020 and then had the scans which all came back as all cancer gone. Phew!!

After the initial op I lost my hearing and they kept telling me it was nothing to do with thyroid cancer and my answer was I do t really care what it is to do with just can someone help in finding out what it is.  I was then referred to another Consultant in the same Dept. He ordered various tests, Covid then happened and all appointment have been cancelled.  I had an appointment made in March for today and I have been patiently waiting and I get a phone call to say it would be a phone consultation, if that was not bad enough I have waited in all day for the Consultant to ring and he didnt.

So where I am today is my hearing is still affected, I now have a hoarse voice again, lymph nodes in my neck prominent and I have a restriction  at the back of my throat.

I may add up until the cancer I have never been ill, never been in hospital other than to have two children and have never had to take any medication so I find all this really stressful.

  • Hi Vivienne

i am sorry you find yourself in this awful covid situation of phone consultations and not actually seeing anyone about the after effects of your operation. It sounds like you need to get in touch with your GP who can then refer you back to the ENT department to try and get your hearing sorted out.

My surgeon managed to get me in just before lockdown for my operation but since then it has just been phone calls. I am having my RAI next week so will actually be seeing someone!. I had a list of questions I had written down for the consultant and just asked him them all over the phone. Half the medical secretaries are working  from home and departments are moving back in after relocating elsewhere, i think you just have to persevere with calling your GP and the Consultants, hopefully you will get an appointment to actually see someone very soon.

    best of luck

  • Hi Jan,

Thank you so much for replying to my rant.

I wish you luck with your RAI and wish you the very best of health for the future.
