Frustrated

Apologies if this seems like a rant but I am frustrated and scared.
Two weeks ago I found out I have papillary thyroid cancer, I had a really good and positive conversation with the specialist nurse and doctor to say that based on the ultrasound the lump is approximately 2.5cm in size and there doesn’t appear to be any lymph nodes. I was also told that due to Covid I can’t be given a date for surgery and I can’t even be given a ballpark guess of when that will be.  I haven’t heard anything from anyone since, and I know I’m being sensitive but I feel a bit abandoned. Sorry just ranting

Hi, I had the same diagnosis at 33 weeks pregnant. I gave birth 5 weeks ago after going a week overdue. They wanted me to continue with the pregnancy as it was best for the baby and I was close to the end. Due to the Covid 19 virus my operation was cancelled when it should have been 2 weeks after my baby was born. I am now scared of what this will mean for my future and if it is going to shorten my time with my baby in the long run. I am not sure what to do or who to talk to and I’m just worrying all the time and feel like the lump in my throat is changing now. I was told they will contact me when lockdown is over.

  • Hey there and ,

Welcome to the forum, though I'm sorry you both need to be here.

I totally understand that having a cancer diagnosis, being told it needs to be removed, and then being told - but we'll do it in a few months time, is a scary situation to be in. Usually when you hear 'cancer', you just want it out of you as fast as possible! You've definitely not been abandoned though, there's just nothing to talk to you about or do with you at the moment. Which is where groups like MacMillan come in to fill the gap and lend the emotional support people need in all sorts of situations and circumstances. So neither of you are alone, you've got us now!

I guess the way to look at it and think about it is that if it was urgent, and if they thought waiting would harm you in any way - they wouldn't delay it. You would have been in the hospital, having half or all of your thyroid whipped out. So the fact they are happy waiting, means that you've not got one of the bad cases, and you're perfectly safe to have your operation delayed.

One thing we've all learnt here in the thyroid group, is patience. Nothing moves quickly when it comes to thyroids, and there are great big long waits quite regularly. So we come on here, we have a chat and a moan, and we share with people who know where we're coming from and have been through the same or similar things.

So if you've any questions, anything you want to get off your chest, post away. We're always here to listen and help where we can!

    Hi Lass,

Thank you for your reply! It’s helpful to know that there are others who know how I’m feeling too. I think with the current situation of Covid 19 on top of the birth of my baby I am just a little nervous and feeling more anxious about it even more than usual (I am sure my surging hormones aren’t helping!). I will post on here when I need some reassurance and hopefully I will find some here.

Thank you again for your reply, it was definitely needed!

    xx
