Hi. I have recently had a thymoma removed by sternotomy. I was told it was malignant but they caught it early and got it all out without the need for radiotherapy. They said I would have check ups for a few years and I was just wondering what sort of thing I could expect and also what are the chances of this or any other cancer returning? Thank you.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm glad to hear that you've had successful surgery and that all the cancer has been removed. I have not had this type of cancer but I noticed that your post had gone unanswered.

Your CNS should be able to tell you what to expect when you go for your check-ups and also what is the chance of the cancer returning. Alternatively you could post your question in ask a nurse and one of the specialist cancer nurses will aim to respond within 2 working days.

    Wishing you all the best

Hi I'm a thyomoma survivor six years know.

I had surgery, chaemo and radiotherapy due to the advanced stage of the tumour.

I now have yearly check ups which involve a chest x-ray or CT scan, in addition to blood tests.

Nobody can really predict if the cancer will return but I don't allow cancer to define me and try and live each day the best way that I can.

    Hello,

It was thought I had Lung Cancer as tests showed a mass on the left side of my chest but now the Radiologist is saying it looks more likely to be cancer on my Thymus Gland and surgery looks likely once my case has been discussed by the surgeon, radiologist etc.. next Friday.  Please can you tell me what to expect treatment wise?

    Thank you.

    Hi Karen,

My surgery involved part of my left upper lung being removed, chaemotherapy and radiotherapy.

That was six years ago and I'm in the best if health now.

    Hope all goes well.
