Hello, dear people…
I never thought I would be one to join this forum, but here I am. I have been diagnosed with stomach cancer about 2 months ago and yesterday I got out of the hospital, where I have been admitted for 2 weeks. I had total gastrectomy (stomach removal) and D2 lymphadenectomy. It will still take some time to find out the stage of my cancer but it worries me a lot knowing that even though I underwent these horrible surgeries (plus complications) and I’m in so much pain, I still don’t know what to expect from now on. I still don’t know the stage nor how much time I have left on earth. I don’t know what to expect and I don’t know anything about my career or future anymore. Is anyone able to tell me, how do you cope with such a harsh diagnosis and go around day by day?Is it possible to have a long life if the cancer was caught early? How badly does chemotherapy affect you and your well being (in case I might have to do it once they figure out the stage)? for bombarding you with all this information, I truly wish you all recover and stay strong through such a difficult period. Please let me know if you have any questions that I could answer.
I am really sorry to hear about your diagnosis and especially as you are so young!
Cancer is treatable and I am now five years since my diagnosis. I also had bowel cancer sixteen years ago. And it was not early stage but surgery and chemo was successful!
I have had chemo both times and the medical team do monitor you very closely to cut down the risk of long term effects.
It is very difficult to come to terms with a cancer diagnosis but especially when you are so young. If you have a Maggie’s Centre near you, they provide great support and MacMillan offer counselling through BUPA. All of this may help you emotionally.
Recovery takes time, you have had major surgery and so getting back to eating and drinking takes time.
Do use this group as there are some lovely people with positive stories.
Good luck!
Jac
Hi, I’m so sorry to hear of your diagnosis… sending you all the best in your recovery journey from the operation. I had a TG April 22… chemo before and after… it wasn’t a pleasant experience but I know I had to do it to help me survive. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 signet ring… Recovery takes a long long time and you are both uncomfortable and tired… But it’s a year now since my last chemo and I am back at work part time and eating constantly … I did loose 3 stone weight but stabilised my new weight for 9 months, and have now gained a few pounds… I am fitter than I was before cancer too.
All biopsies came back negative last year… I recently had to have a CT scan because of liver function test playing up (which has stabilised) and just last week results came back fine… A BIG relief …
I’ve tried to stay positive all the way through and I asked my family and friends to be too as I didn’t want to dwell on any future outlook if it came etc… and it helped me big time…
Your recovery from your operation and chemotherapy if you require it will take your strength but keep on top of it as it helps your mindset…
Take care, keep in touch…
Michele
