Dear All,

I wonder if anybody experiences like I do, stomach pains, sweat, pains on either sides of the lower back, sometimes when I eat. I don´t know if it´s to do with the amount of food I eat, how fast I eat or the type of food I eat. I try to keep a food diary but there´s no pattern. I had a partial gastrectomy almost one year ago.

I look forward to your feedbacks.

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that you're experiencing lots of unpleasant symptoms and wondered if you'd spoken to your hospital team?

I'm not a member of this group but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be more easily seen.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi Wawa I think this is called “dumping syndrome” it is definitely worth bringing up to your healthcare team and they might be able to help yuou. Online suggests a) decrease sugary food and increase food with high fibre content b) don’t have liquids 30 mins after meals and several other suggestions, depending on whether it’s almost straight after eating or several hours. They also suggest you to rest for a while after eating. I hope this is helpful.

  • Hi yes it’s called dumping syndrome, I get it on the odd occasion mainly with carbohydrates. I mentioned it to my surgeon on an review appointment and he said pastas, cakes, biscuits, some bread, sugary snacks etc can cause it… one day I had a hot cross bun and literally 40 minutes later I was about to go swimming and I got in the pool, I could feel the sweats starting, shakes and feeling faint (which sends me asleep sometimes) happening… I just lay on a woggle until I felt ok to get out of the pool… it’s horrible…

    Take care

    Michele

  • As others have said, it sounds like dumping syndrome.  I found the Oesophageal Patient Association website very helpful

    Hope this helps!

  • Dear All,

Thank you for your replies. The pain in the stomach, lower back on both sides and sweat tend to last about an hour then it eases off. It happened this morning after I got up I had a smoothie, a peach, went swimming shortly after I got out of the pool I felt unwell, pain, sweating. I decided to change my diet and cut down on sugary food, sweets, chocolates, cakes... it´ll be hard I have a very sweet tooth and bread which I eat a lot of. I´ll keep you posted how I will get on.
