My dad who is in his late 70s has just had a full laryngectomy which ended up having a few complications and he spent 9 weeks in hospital he is very weak is fed through a tube and appears to have lost control of his bladder and bowls he has always been a lion of a man was still out roofing up until a few years ago he also has quite advanced copd obviously can’t speak now but on top of that has advanced but localised stomach cancer he has decided he doesn’t feel up to the chemotherapy and isn’t well enough for the operation so i guess that leaves us with palliative care now I completely respect his choice as it’s his fight not ours but feel so confused as to what to expect the doctors aren’t giving us any time frame and I’m scared for him I don’t want him to suffer anymore and he’s quite depressed understandably so but he doesn’t want to see the grand kids I don’t know how to help him what have other people experienced been I can’t imagine a world without my dad in it
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. This must be such a sad and scary time for you and your family. It would be worth talking to the medical team to discuss how they can make him more comfortable and manage his pain. There is a lot of support for you from Macmillan and other support services. The group Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum may help too, as they are going through the same experience.
From my own experience, it’s important to pull together as a family and do what you can for your dad. Even small things will mean a lot.
Take care!
Jac
