Hi
My mum has been diagnosed with stomach cancer and needs a total gastrectomy and spleen removal. The consultant has advised that this is a huge operation and it has a major effect on quality of life afterwards, and due to her age he said the outcome in her age group tends not to be very successful. She has to decide on operation with huge risk or Palative chemo. If any one has been through this or have a knowledge of this operation, I would appreciate your thoughts on it . My mum is over 79 but her fitness is good other than the recent diagnosis. Thank you.
Hi and welcome to the online community
I'm very sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with stomach cancer and I know what a difficult time this will be for you both.
Having to make treatment decisions can be very difficult and I noticed that you hadn't had any replies to your post yet. If you type 'total gastrectomy and spleen removal' into the search bar at the top of the page you'll find lots of previous posts on this subject. You could have have a look through some of them and reply to the more recent posters if you think they could help you further.
I noticed that there has been a recent conversation between and maggie55 about this treatment and have 'tagged' them into my reply to you in the hope that they'll pop on and tell you about their experiences.
While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Wishing you and you mum all the best with whatever she decides to do.
I had the operation 6 weeks ago, I am 48. It removed all the cancer, which is amazing. I had 123 lymph nodes removed, stomach, spleen and most of my oesophagus. I’m doing really well other than the sickness. I recovered well after the op but am struggling to eat. The dietitian will be very helpful after the op. I would definitely say go for it but very important to be fit and well before the op. Try and buy a device called a respiratory exerciser to expand the lungs before she goes in. Really helpful. If you need any help don’t hesitate to contact me x
