Struggling to stay asleep

I have stomach cancer and had a sub-total gastronomy on 4th August. I finding that I cannot sleep for for than 3-4 hours without waking up with a very painful back from staying in one position. I naturally move in my sleep but cannot since the operation, I find that turning on my side is too painful, even when I try to support the stomach with pillows. I have exististing fatty tissue on my back which has become irritated and very painful. I feel this is because of not being able to move.

I was just wondering if  anyone else experiences the same issues following surgery and how long should I expect the problem to last ?

I’m going to my GP this afternoon to have my staples removed and will see if I can get another appointment with a doctor. Although I’m not sure what they can do… they didn’t seems interested at the hospital and I felt disbelieved/overreacting when I spoke to my GP about this originally (approximately 4 years ago)

It might not sound much but this is affecting me more - through back and side pain and lack of sleep than the actual cancer op itself.

  • Hi

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

I hope you were able to chat through this problem with your GP when you saw them the other day and they have been able to offer help.

  • Hi

Hope your post op pain is reduced gradually by now. My husband went through TG last year. He suffered back pain for nearly 1 month but shoulder/ arm pain lasted for nearly 2 months.

You will be fine gradually. Don't overthink else u won't get sleep.

I give my hubby half Melosoft tablet ( that is about 1.5mg ) for sleep. It is the best remedy I thought since it has no side effects.

Tonnes of love and wish u speedy recovery. Heart️

  • Hi, take your time love, it’s very early days for you, I found that I couldn’t sleep on my side for 2-3 months, it does get better though, hope you feel better soon
