Hi,my husband had a total gastrectomy in December 24 .the family have organised a super holiday to orlando for 9 of us. He has recovered well from the operation but is still losing weight and finding it difficult to drink much. We are going for 3 weeks in early september so not that long. Has anyone been before after this op and how have you managed food wise? I'm taking a wide necked flask for soup but would like advise on eating whilst out there. He hates yoghurt so thats a no go. Thanks for any suggestions

  • Hi, I haven’t been that far but you should be able to get pretty much what he’s eating at home, does he eat jacket potatoes, I ate quite a lot of soft foods for some time after the operation, I had small portions and then built it up, have you spoken with any of the team about the continued weight loss? The dietitians will be able to help. Best of luck x

  • Hi,thanks for reply.we saw the team last week and they were very concerned about the weight loss. The dietician said if it continues he might have to have a feeding tube. He is terrified about that but struggling to eat more as he gets a pain in his lower abdomen if he eats too much. He had a ct scan last week to check if anything else is going on and has an endoscopy on 9th july but I'm trying to get more calories into him. Just keeping fingers crossed he is ok to go on holiday as he is really looking forward to it.

  • Have they tried ensure supplements, these taste better than fortisip, I used to get the banana flavour ones and added a banana in a blender when I struggled to eat, sometimes it can become a problem eating because if you have been nauseous you can get put off because you expect to feel unwell, worth getting the book - also available on kindle
