Palliative Chomotherapy

My husband has just finished 6 cycles of palliative chemo for inoperable stomach cancer. He’s feeling anxious to know whether this has been effective but the hospital hasn’t organised a follow-up scan yet.
He is still feeling nauseous mostly at night.

I know everyone has a different response but how soon do you normally get a scan after treatment and how long does it take to get over side effects after finishing the course of chemo?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm not a member of this group but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your husband's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Does your husband have a CNS (cancer nurse specialist)? If so a quick call to them will probably answer your question about how quickly he will get scanned. If he doesn't have a CNS then his consultant's secretary should be able to see when he's scheduled.

I hope you don't have too much longer to wait and that the side effects of his treatment quickly wear off.

    • Update.
He was diagnosed in May 2024, a CT scan revealed the shape and type of tumour prevented surgery being successful. He started his 6 cycles of palliative chemo at the end of June and finished mid 0ct. Main symptoms/side effects, tiredness, unable to eat normal size meals , still has heart burn and nausea at night, feels the cold a lot.

Three appointments have arrived now , a telephone with medical oncologist , CT scan and then face to face with clinical oncologist.

Would interested to hear from anyone on similar pathway . Not sure of difference between medical and clinical oncologist and significance.

( we do have named nurses we can call which is comforting).

  • Hi, I haven’t been on the same pathway as your husband, but I waited about 6 weeks after my last chemo for a scan, try calling your clinical nurse specialist, or even Mackmillan from here.

I hope he can be supported to feel better soon, Take care

  • Thanks for your reply, we have an appoint for scan now .

  • Hi,my husband was diagnosed with stomach cancer spread to peritoneum in May 2023.He was on chemo and had scans every 3 month’s.His 1st chemo didn’t work and he went on to 2nd line which has worked very well. The tumour in his stomach has stayed stable and chemo has taken all the cancer away on the outside. He hasn’t had chemo since March this year and has a scan every 3 months and then a follow up with oncologist 2 weeks later. His next appointment is a scan mid January. He also isn’t on medication apart from cyclizine for sickness and he does get very tired, also feels the cold a lot.Hope some of this helps.Wishing your husband and yourself all the best

  • That’s so helpful, thank you.
    Best wishes to you both.
