Hi all,my husband felt unwell in April went to the doctor and after blood tests was diagnosed with anemia,as this is unusual for a man of 64 he was also booked for a endoscopy. At his appointment he was told that he had a suspicious lesion and was booked in for a ct scan which he had a fortnight ago.He was then booked in for a laparoscopy which he had last Thursday. After the operation the surgeon told him that he had cancer in his stomach which has spread to the peritoneum so it is inoperable. He has recommended chemotherapy. There is to be a meeting of the MDT tomorrow and then a nurse will phone us to talk about what happens next.We are both overwhelmed with this and absolutely terrified at what comes next.My husband is a fit and well 64 year old with no symptoms apart from the anemia
Thank you he is doing ok so far.Hope you are keeping well,we aren’t that far from you.Raigmore is our hospital
Well first session of Chemotherapy done, side effects were stronger than he thought at first very tired, hand foot syndrome is really bad his fingerprints have disappeared and fingernails are very sore, and very red face too.It is like his skin is sunburnt. Also appetite since Sunday hasn’t been great, not really eaten but he has Fortisip drinks which are very good.So now a weeks rest until next one
Hi Buffandflo
Out of all the side effects the hand and foot was the worst for my mum, it was horrid. I think urea cream was recommended to us, as it just basically gets the skin peeled off faster so it can heal more quickly..(I think that’s the premise). Take care of yourselves and yes rest!!!!
Update My husband finished his first session of capox chemo and started to feel a bit unwell. After a few days of not eating and not really drinking either got admitted to hospital where they said he had a severe kidney infection due to the chemo. So after 4 days of fluids he is getting home today and we have an appointment with his consultant on Monday where hopefully he will be able to continue with chemo maybe it will have to be tweaked a bit I don’t know.I just wondered did anybody else have a kidney infection,we were told it wasn’t a common side effect, and what was the outcome of it?
Hi my first type of chemo was Capox. I didn’t have a kidney infection but I do know that when I have my bloods taken my kidney function is closely monitored before chemo is agreed! I did give up after the fifth session of Capox as I couldn’t tolerate feeling so unwell as my treatment is palliative I couldn’t put myself through this for 12 sessions. I’m now on my 7th session of Fifolli and whilst this has been tweaked for me it’s much better and hopefully I get through 12 sessions. I had a scan after the 6th session and the cancer had remained static no shrinkage but no growth and no spread this has spurred me on to continue. I hope they can sort something out for your husband maybe tweak the Capox or change the cocktail completely, do let us know the outcome of your consultancy. Wishing both of you well x
Thank you for your reply.I am so glad you had good scan results and you feel better with the different chemo. My husband saw his oncologist yesterday and she has decided to take him off Capox altogether and has put him on to folfox with a reduced dose of 25% of the oxaliplatin so hopefully it will be more tolerable for his kidneys and the other side effects he has been experiencing. We are just putting it down to bad luck that it was his first session and he ended up in hospital. As he also is getting palliative treatment we don’t want him to be spending too much time in hospital
