Hi all,my husband felt unwell in April went to the doctor and after blood tests was diagnosed with anemia,as this is unusual for a man of 64 he was also booked for a endoscopy. At his appointment he was told that he had a suspicious lesion and was booked in for a ct scan which he had a fortnight ago.He was then booked in for a laparoscopy which he had last Thursday. After the operation the surgeon told him that he had cancer in his stomach which has spread to the peritoneum so it is inoperable. He has recommended chemotherapy. There is to be a meeting of the MDT tomorrow and then a nurse will phone us to talk about what happens next.We are both overwhelmed with this and absolutely terrified at what comes next.My husband is a fit and well 64 year old with no symptoms apart from the anemia

  • Hi and so very sorry to read your post, I’m no help whatsoever as it’s not long since my husband had his stomach out, I just wanted to tell you I know absolutely how you feel as I went through it a few months ago with my husband. He’s 80 now and we keep our fingers crossed.
I just wanted to say hang in there I’m sure people will be along very soon and I hope you get some good news when the nurse phones you up, Hugs to you both xx

  • Thank you for answering, and I hope your husband is doing well.Yes very nervously waiting for call this morning to see what’s next and hopefully get treatment started soon.I don’t know anything about chemotherapy so reading as much as I can just now.Thank you again

  • I am so sorry to hear about your husband.  It must be such a shock for you both!  There was a post on this group with others who had Stage 4, which had a few options for treatment.  Chemo is one but immunotherapy may be another.

It’s worth getting as much information as possible and having a list of questions for the specialist nurse.   I would certainly want to discuss it with the consultant oncologist.
I hope you get a clearer picture of the options soon.

Do use this Forum for support and if you have a Maggie’s Centre near you, do contact them as I found them really helpful.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you for your reply.I will have a look for that post.Yes hoping to speak to the oncologist soon.It has just happened so fast,my husband is a postman and was at work right up till he went for his endoscopy.I will look up Maggie’s Centre too.Thank you so much for your help

  • Update: We have now spoken to the gi nurse and have had a few questions answered. There is no spread to lungs or liver, also a blood test called dypd result showed that he would be able to get a strong dose of chemotherapy. So next stage is a meeting with oncologist next Monday and hopefully get a date to start chemotherapy.Still feels like a long time to wait though when we are scared that it might still be spreading

  • It’s positive there is a treatment plan!  Once the chemo does its work, you can assess the next steps with advice from the medical team.  Others on this group have explored a second opinion in relation to surgery.
My cancer was eradicated by chemotherapy and others have had really positive results, so fingers crossed!

  • Thank you once again for your reply, very helpful.Yes hopefully when chemotherapy starts,we can maybe see a clearer picture of what is happening. The timeline for gastric cancer spread to the peritoneum doesn’t look very favourable but maybe I need to stop looking at the internet and trust in the treatment, just so scared right now

  • Yes! Statistics are just that and every one is an individual!  There are many people on this Forum with Stage 4 cancer who have outlived the statistics!

No one knows what tomorrow will bring so all you can do is find happiness every day!
    Good luck!

  • Update,we had a video call with my husband’s oncologist today. He has been offered Capox as chemotherapy.I wonder has anyone any experience of this regimen. Also if his PDL1 level comes back negative he is going to be offered Nivolumab which seems to have good results. So hopefully he is hoping to start treatment within the next 3 weeks. We are very nervous about side effects but hopefully won’t be too bad

  • That’s really positive news!  Capox is quite commonly used chemo.  Everyone reacts differently to chemo and I think you said he was fit and well so that’s a positive!
I don’t have experience of Nivolumab but I have heard about it.  Immunotherapy is the game changer in cancer treatments so fingers crossed that he can get that too.

There are a couple of others on this group who have Stage 4 diagnosis.  The thing to remember there’s a difference between incurable but treatable and palliative.  Hopefully the lovely people who are in the same situation as your husband will come on and share some advice!

    Hope treatment goes well!
