Time frame from diagnosis to treatment

Hi, my Dad had an endoscopy 2 weeks ago tomorrow which said his stomach looked suspicious for tumour, he then had a ct scan done 9 days ago. He hasn't heard another thing, is this a normal timescale? What will be the next step, will he have pet scan? What is the time frame from diagnosis to starting treatment? We are NHS Scotland.

Thanks

  • Hi

I'm not a member of this group so don't know what the normal waiting times are from having a CT scan to having a diagnosis but I do know what an anxious time this can be.

Hopefully some of the other members of the group will pop along soon to help you with this question along with what the next step might be for your dad.

I've found this information for you from Cancer Research UK on waiting time from diagnosis to starting treatment in Scotland. Clicking on the link will give you further information but it says:

In England, Scotland and Northern Ireland the current targets are:

    • no more than 2 months (62 days) wait between the date the hospital receives an urgent referral for suspected cancer and the start of treatment
    • no more than 31 days wait between the meeting at which you and your doctor agree the treatment plan and the start of treatment

  • Hi

This will be an anxious time for you.  Usually there will be a number of tests carried out after an endoscopy including a CT scan.  The medical team will also wait for the pathology results which they will get following the endoscopy.   I remember it as a really difficult time but the medical team were just gathering all the information.  There will then be a Multi Disciplinary Team meeting to agree the treatment plan.
It can take a few weeks but it then gets easier as you start treatment.

It might be worth phoning to speak to the Specialist Nurse if you have one as they link with the medical team.  The team includes a surgeon and an oncologist?  The Specialist Nurse will know what is happening and when the MDT is taking place.

I had an MRI rather than a PET scan so every case is different.

Do post any questions you have and good luck!
