hi

I have had a myxofibrosarcoma removed from my foot. A below knee amputation has been offered/suggested, for quality of life, as radiotherapy apparently may leave me with a painful useless stiff foot. There are no local patients that have been through this as I’ve asked both the sarcoma team & Maggies.
unfortunately I have a rare cancer in a rare site so trying to find someone with experience of this who I could speak to.  I’ve Been told there is no survival benefit in me undertaking the amputation Grateful for anyone who has experienced radiotherapy to the foot to reach out

Regards Catherine

  • Hi Catherine

I am sorry that you have not yet had a reply to your post but sometimes it can just take a little longer, especially where there is a rarer cancer.

I understand that it is a difficult decision to make and that it would really help to speak to someone who has gone through similar.

I had pelvic radiotherapy myself ( endometrial carcinoma sarcoma) and have been left with long term effects. However I find I can manage them on the whole. I remember being told by my consultant that it is difficult for them to predict who will be adversely affected by the radiotherapy but that they have to go through all the possible side effects.

While you are waiting for a response to your question these may be of interest.

I don't know whether you are aware of Home | Sarcoma UK but it may be worth having a look on there.

  • Hello Dear,

I was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma on the side of left knee. Tumor of size 5.5cm was removed with wide excision surgery. After plastic surgery, I took 25 sessions of radiotherapy for 50gy in total. Initially I was told by the doctor, that I may not be able to fold the knee post radiotherapy and they adviced me to continue physiotherapy along the radiotherapy session. Now after 2 years, thou cannot have the knee flexion beyond 110degrees, but it's manageable. Able to ride a motorcycle, can climb stairs up and down slowly.

Your doctor might be referring to the fibrosis which might occur post radiotherapy session. Check to see if there is any solution they can provide to you as in my case, they suggested physiotherapy.  But nothing was guaranteed.

Hope my message helps. Wishing you a good recovery. Be confident and you can beat this crap...
