Inoperable Stomach Gist

Hello Everyone,   Yes, we are all in the same boat, but,  rowing like crazy to stay afloat and reach the sunshine at the end of the journey.  I was diagnosed in January 2023 after a major bleed.  All of the usual tests - brilliant service with kindness - and results were: Stomach Gist, top of Stomach that had spread outside and into nearby Nodes.    It is the type that does not respond to Chemo/Radio and is Inoperable.  Sounds so awful,  but the MDT came back with the thought of taking a Target drug...Imitanib.   Now as I write,   I have just finished the first 3 mths on it and have had a Scan which the results will be known this coming Wednesday...am I worried?  of course but at the same time I feel good,  eat well and yes I do fall asleep often and easily but apart from that I am very active - too much according to my Wife - I am 83 yrs old this Year and I feel positive that I am going to beat this.  By the way,  my Gist is called  'Little Sod'  because that is what it is - how dare it come into my Life and disrupt things...So, back to the rowing, keeping positive and I will update after Wednesday.

  • Hello Bowling Stone,

Welcome to the Online Community. I hope that you find it as helpful and informative as I have done throughout my diagnosis and treatment.

I am sorry to hear of your cancer diagnosis. It must have been a worry when they said the type you have does not respond to radiotherapy/chemotherapy or surgery. I am pleased that they were able to offer you a targeted therapy drug and I hope that the results from your scan will be positive for you.

I am glad that you are currently feeling , can keep active and are able to remain positive. I love the way you have named your Gist- a great name too!

Good Luck for your appointment on Wednesday and please do let us know how you get on. Either way we will be here to offer support.

  • Hi Bowling stone,

I was told I had a GIST.  This was thankfully removed on 1st June. Unfortunately,  not all the results have come back good. I am awaiting more results in a more detailed report from The Christie but I will be going on Imatinib soon.

You sound like a very positive person and I'm glad you are coping well on it. I hope I am the same as I feel good right now.

I wish you well and hope your results come back with positive news.

  • Thank you for your good wishes and I will update ASAP.   It is an anxious wait for your results - there is nothing we ourselves can do change our situation except carry on living life as normal and being positive.  Having said that I am always positive that I am going to win the Lottery.....and my Wife has plans in place!!

  • Hi Bowling stone

i too have GIST, and have been living with this for the last 6 years.

i just wanted to wish you all the very best with your treatment

    Best wishes

  • Thank you, what treatment are you having - sounds good.

  • I started off on Imatinib, I took this for 4 years. When that failed to work I moved onto Sunitinib and have been on that for almost 2 years, but it appears that this is no longer working, so I’m waiting for another scan and will discuss the next option, there is another drug available, but there may also be a trial that I’m suitable for. I’ve suffered badly with the side effects, but try and do as much as I possibly can. I was 59 when I was first diagnosed and had to give up work. I will be 66 this year and enjoy spending time with family and friends and making the most of every day

Take care of yourself, so nice to hear from other people with the same cancer

  • Sorry just reading back I saw that you were awaiting results of your scan. I do hope all went well.

  • Results have shown the Tumour is shrinking and another Scan in 3 mths...good news and all thanks to the MDT Bronglais, Aberystwyth.  Best wishes,

  • That’s fantastic news. I’m so pleased for you
