Hi all
im a fit and otherwise healthy 51 yr old father of two and a builder by trade.
just got diagnosed on Thursday with LMS on lower leg above ankle. Been given two options
1: removal and reconstruction OR
2: amputation below the knee
I guess my wife and I want to know from others how their choice turned out and they’re recovery journeys.
my wife is up and down and feels like her head is swimming with so much info to digest. I’m just not sure on the options given. I’m hopping (excuse the pun) between option 1 and 2 on a daily basis and feeling the pressure of making this decision asap as I’m booked in for early Jan to have op.
Hi TheJWs I had a different cancer to you but I imagine the process of making a decision between available options is similar.
My advice would be to make a list of pros and cons for each available option and see if that helps you decide. If going for option 1 and then going back for option 2 if option 1 doesn't work is possible then I would list that as a 3rd option and do a list of pros and cons for that too.
How I would think about it is that I would probably prefer not to have the amputation but would need to know the worst case scenario If I went for option 1 vs the worst case scenario if I went for option 2. Also if you go for option 1 and it doesn't quite work out can you then go back for option 2 and is there a downside to doing it this way.
Making the lists will also help you work out any gaps in information so that you can go back and ask your doctor any questions you have that you need answers to in order to make a decision.
You see why a list of pros and cons and worst/best case scenarios for each option might be useful. Putting it all in writing where you can easily keep referring to it can help free up your mind and help you make a clearer more informed decision.
Have your doctors given you an idea of what they think is best because if they have then I would probably go with what they advise.
Hope you make the right decision for you.
Thank you for responding. Pros and cons is a good idea. Will try
Hi, I was diagnosed with LMS at the beginning of October after having what was believed to be a ganglion removed.
I had a further operation on 29th November where a larger area was removed and reconstructed with a graft taken from my groin. Thankfully all of the LMS has been removed with clear margins. All wounds healing amazingly and feeling really optimistic.
Are you being treated by a specialist sarcoma team?
Please click into my name to read my story, hopefully it will help you and your wife a little x
