5 weeks post-biopsy, but what is growing on my scar?

I had my biopsy 5 weeks ago for 'a suspected SCC or Keratoacanthoma' on my face, which had grown very quickly. I have not had my results yet. At my dermatology consultation I was told that I would be fast-tracked for a 'deep shave biopsy' but when I removed my dressings my wound was around 5cm long with dissolvable stitches, running from just below my eye to level with my nostrils. My scar has been difficult to care for and to live with due to its size and position and its lumps and bumps. Although much of it has now knitted together, the top end of my scar, a bit higher up from where my original 'spot' was sited, now looks like a blood blister around 0.5cm across and underneath my eye has puffed up again. Is this normal? I am already stressed with waiting for my results, but now I am worried about this as well.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the skin cancer group.

It's always worrying when something unexpected happens, especially when you're waiting for the results of a biopsy.

Were you given contact details for a skin cancer nurse specialist (SCNS), sometimes referred to as a keyworker or Macmillan nurse, when you had your excision biopsy? If so, give them a call tomorrow and talk through what has happened with them. They will either be able to put your mind at rest over the phone or ask you to go in so that they can check it out for you.

If you weren't given any contact details then phone the hospital and ask to be put through to the secretary of the consultant/surgeon who's looking after you. She should then be able to either give you contact details or pass a message on.

  • Hi latchbrook, thanks for coming back to me.

No, I have not been assigned any kind of keyworker and I also have no idea of the name of the plastic surgeon who perfomed my excision. I was never given any inormation leaflets on the procedure either, so I have no idea what to look out for after the initial post-op period as the scar heals.

I do have a generic wound care sheet though, which covers the first couple of weeks post-biopsy, and there is a number for the hospital's Dermatology Department at the top, so I guess I could give them a call.

I will update this post if I have any further news.
