General Actinic Keratosis and Efudix

Thoughts please. Sorry might get long winded. I am UK. 10 weeks ago had 2 BCC's and another area biopsy taken. Plus given Solaraze to put on 2 suspected actinic keratosis patches on my nose and ear. All good not a problem with that but when wounds healed enough to use Factor 50 yet again had a massive reaction to it face went red, blistered and oozed, was so painful specially on my nose where had used the Solaraze. My intolerance of seemingly any sun blocks is why i am here now as never been able to protect myself and a farmer so not possible to stay out of the sun. So just getting all that nicely healing and just starting to look good and have another reaction to something and used nothing new so ????? So painful i go to GP and he sends a photo to a consultant somewhere and it comes back with i have actinic keratosis all over my face and should used Efudix cream twice a day for 3 weeks and stay out of sunlight or use Factor 50. This person had no case history, didn't know i had used sSlaraze and what that had done to me. My GP now not happy i won't follow his advice. So worried about using Efudix all over my face as i know what it is highly likely going to do. I have seen photos of just patches raw and oozing so to think of my whole face like that and the pain i just can't bring myself to go there. My Maxo Facial prescribed me Solaraze because of my skin sensitivity and there was no mention of the actinic keratosis all over my face. I had to stop using the Solaraze as it says not to use on broken skin and mine was open sores and bleeding. Now my nose has healed at the moment looks best it has done in years with no crusty keratosis patch. I have a phone consultation with them on 23rd Augsut for results from the 2 BCC's and the other biopsy so feel i should tell them before proceeding with any other treatments. Does actinic keratosis really come and go. The sun block reaction i am sure was, as responded to anti histamine really well. Second episode didn't. Now starting to heal again and all settle down. Just wonder if anyone else had any similar experience in any way and Efudix users would you happily use all over your face? Thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read about the reaction you've had when using sunscreen and it's natural to worry about the effect of using a treatment all over your face.

I don't recall anyone in the group mentioning that they reacted badly to sunscreen but responding to you will 'bump' your post back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be easier to see.

While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you haven't already, you could use the search function in the group to look for others who have used Efudix in the past to read about their experiences.

  • Hi, Julia.  We have similar circumstances.  I had a bad experience with diclofenac for the treatment of actinic keratosis. In the beginning, the gel helped me and I thought it seemed like it was starting to go away but, after a few months, after treatment the actinic keratosis started to come back. Now I'm hesitating and don't know what to do, whether to repeat the long course of diclofenac or start a course of efudex on my face but it's still scary and not safe. I'm thinking and hesitating. Tell me how long did you use solaraze and was it 3% or 5% gel? How many months did you use it?
