Excision procedure

Over the past 18 months I have been seen by various professionals - pharmacist, GP, several different dermatologists. They all agreed that I have some basal cell carcinomas. Two on my arm and one on my back were dealt with by liquid nitrogen and seem to fully cleared up. One is bigger and I was told last September that I would need an excision. In January I was given an appointment for an excision to be carried out at my local hospital. When the letter came through it said it was for an excision on my chest. I called the hospital and the secretary said that she would need to cancel that appointment and set up a new one. I heard nothing for 11 weeks. Someone told me about a Patient Advice and Liaison Service at my hospital. I contacted them and they arranged for a new appointment. This is in mid May and is at a hospital about 20 miles away. My daughter happens to work near there and has agreed to take me and bring me home. I would really like to have some idea how long it will be between dropping me off (at 09.30) and when she can pick me up. Is it a short or long procedure? Also I would like some idea about how long recovery will take. We grandchild mind after pre-school each afternoon, will I be able to get about on the next day, or not for a long time? I fear these my be pretty unanswerable questions, but some ideas or experiences would be helpful.

  • Hi ancient

I think in terms of how long you'll be at the hospital depends on how busy they are and where you are on the list.

How long the procedure is depends on where it is and if it's a straightforward excision or if it'll involve a flap or graft.

Also, recovery time will depend on the extent of the surgery.

I had a basal cell removed from my nose and I was out and about the next day with a dressing on it and perfectly ok. I do think the relief of it being done contributed to that.

I was healed up within 6 weeks.

Others take longer depending on what they've had done.

I think the best thing for you is to contact your surgeon and ask and they'll be able to more accurately answer your concerns.

Please keep in contact as to how you get on. You'll find this group a great help
