Just finished Efudix

Hi, I'm now on my last day of a month of Efudix for 2 x BCC on my nose - on the tip and also on the side.  I see the Consultant in a month's time and I understand that Efudix continues to work once you've finished the course?  The front of my nose has crusted a little bit and there is a prominent red lump.  The crust on the side of my nose fell off today and I see that there is also an angry , sore looking red lump - both are the areas of concern.  I was warned not to put too much cream on and I probably have out of worry and also way beyond the spots themselves so I have quite large splurges of red angry skin.

I know everyone's experience is different but because these marks are now very red and sore, I am worried Efudix hasn't worked.  I had imagined there would be nothing at all under the crusts when they fell off, but the marks are still there, albeit looking raw and red.  Maybe they will heal and disappear?

At the moment I am feeling quite lost and scared about this so any information anyone can offer would be much appreciated.  I have been quite rational and strong about this most of the time but have moments of complete panic too.  I see that there are so many wise, kind and strong people here but quite nervous nonetheless about posting but would be so grateful of any guidance.  Thank you.

    1. Hi Sprinkle.

I hope I can bring you some support.  I have had a lot of BCCs removed over the years. The most important thing to focus on is that they are the mildest form of skin cancer. Luckily if we can see it that way they only affect the top layers of skin.  It is scary the first time you are told and I empathise with you. I hope the efudix effectively treats it all for you and it may well have done that. The fact that the area is red and sore and has crusted is a good sign. Just remember it wouldnt be prescribed if it didnt work on some people.

I like you had a BCC on my nose. I had one near the tip and the other on the side of the nose. I was also extremely worried at the time and that is about 4 years ago now I think. I did  need MOHs  surgery and remember you might not need surgery if the cream has worked.  I have to say that  although I was extremely worried at the thought of surgery on my face the job my consultant did was amazing and  you can barely see a mark today. People dont believe me as a result when I say I had  that done.  When it is your face of course it is scary but a MOHs consultanr really knows what he/she is doing. Take each step as it comes as the efudix may well have worked. . The waiting and worrying in my opinion is the worse part so I hope you dont have much longer to wair for your appointmetn

  • Hi Ozzie, I'm sorry not to have replied sooner to your very kind and thoughtful post.  I happened to see my consultant today and, unfortunately, the opinion is that Efudex hasn't worked and it's likely to be a biopsy next.  But I'll have to wait for my proper appointment.  I am getting worried now but trying to keep calm.  Thank you - despite this news I am appreciative of your reassuring words regarding the surgery you had to undergo.  I hope all is fine for you now but I am sorry you've had to go through this.

  • Sorry to hear the Eufidix wasn’t successful I have used on Actinic Keratosis in several areas plus Actinic Chellitis on my lips and found it extremely good Good luck in your future treatment

  • Thank you for your kind reply, Anxious Hattie and it's lovely to hear that your treatment has been successful.  Not having a good day today and have Googled too much.  Just frightened this is something more serious (more than it is) and that's why the Efudix hasn't worked.  The two marks are still there while the redness around both is going.  Sensible me says that although it hasn't worked, are other options and there's nothing I can do until I have a biopsy. anyway  This wasn't done to start with.  But in moments like this my imagination is running riot and I'm just plain scared.  I'm now worried that every single mark on my body is sinister.  My apologies for moaning.

  • Hi Guys

i’ve been reading Sprinkle, Bill, and Steph’s posts on Efudix. Sat I am due to have a bcc removed surgically. I also had a malig melanoma removed by same surgeon 2020. I feel Bill’s advice makes sense, not that I am discounting Stephi’s experience. I too used Efudix cream twice daily for 4-5 weeks which made no flare up at all. I was prescribed Efudix by lovely dermatologist when she had calmed me about melanoma diagnosis telling me to be proactive and to expect things to come up on my skin especially within first 5 years. I feel that my Efudix cream was out of date as it had been opened and used July 20 and when I used it Jan 23 this is why I had very little reaction to the cream and so the precancerous BCC gre thicker and thus requiring surgical removal. My wife Going forward it is better to be proactive and use this cream if anything unusual appears on skin. Hope you don’t mind me commenting on this post. Best wishes to you all with skin care for the future.
