i was not prepared for the aftermath of this surgery and am experiencing hair loss as previously posted. Has anyone else had a BCC removed from their head and lost a lot of hair around the incision and beyond? If so, did it regrow? I know on the surface it seems trivial but as it’s on my crown there is no hiding it and comes after a catalogue of mis diagnosis, a previous operation that was incomplete and general GP incapabity, I’m feeling very low.
I do think when seeing consultants they need to inform us better about possible outcomes for both physical and psychological recovery. There’s a lot written about not having to worry about this type of cancer but those that experience it on either their face or head know that is not the case.
Love and agree with your user name!
Sorry you had to go through this, I recently had a BCC removed from my nose with a skin graft, and an early stage melanoma removed from the back of my arm. BCCs can be invasive and cause serious damage if left untreated, so worry is very understandable. I think it's impossible not to think or worry about having the "C" word attached in any way to ourselves.
The hair loss is such a hard thing, and the crown is really bad place to hide it., so I don't think it's all that trivial. I have a wicked cow-lick and thinning on my scalp, and am very self-conscious about it. I've even looked at bangers hair pieces to hide it and may give them a try soon. Many years ago, a large area of the hair on my crown just fell out. I was in my 20s and my older brother teased me about going bald. It did grow back eventually, and I'm not real sure why it fell out in the first place, but it was very traumatic to me then. It also happened one other time in my 30s, and it did grow back again.
The local anesthetic may have caused some the hair loss. I'm not sure that it will grow back right on the scar itself, but hopefully the area right near it fills in enough to cover it.
Hi FranR,
Thank you for responding. I’m not sure what’s going on with me, I saw the specialist yesterday and he looked at my head and hair loss with a derma scope and said the hair follicles are there and that it’s shock loss and will grow back. I should feel very elated but I don’t. I realise I don’t believe him! I guess this is because what I’m seeing in the mirror is a bigger area all the time. I don’t know if I’m not properly accounting for the overall trauma of the awful run up to diagnosis, the diagnosis and the 2 surgeries. I’ve had very little sleep since May.
I had not realised the anaesthetic might create havoc as well!
Thank you for sharing your experiences with hair loss. My family think that as the surgery is done, I’ve had confirmation that the hair will return, I can just get on with life.
Best wishes.
Hi. I hope you don't mind me replying but I have had quite a few bccs removed from my scalp over the last two years including a larger infiltrative bcc. I thought I would not be able to go without a hat at first but now my hair has grown back around the wounds and (my hubby tells me) only I am conscious of the scars. I just have to be careful of ingrowing hairs around the scar tissue as it's important to keep an eye on any new spots but at the moment all seems healthy on my scalp. It's very stressful, especially when everyone tells you how common it is and that it's not dangerous. You still go through the process of immunotherapy, biopsies, excisions and waiting for results so make sure you have people you can talk to. Take care of yourself and hopefully next year will be a good year.
Hello Louise,
I’m so sorry to read you’ve had several of these, I hope you are ok. I’m pleased your hair has grown back around the scars, Yes you are right it is stressful, horrid in fact. People say well you’re ok now, you’ve got rid of it! The mind has to process the trauma and the body has to heal. I’m scared to death of getting or finding another.
If you don’t mind me asking, how long was it before you noticed your hair growing back around the scars? I’m trying to eat really well and get plenty of rest and hope nature takes care of it!
Very best wishes.
Hi,
My last surgery on my scalp was last Christmas. I got my results on New year's Eve. It was ongoing for two years as they didn't manage to get it all the first time. My hair has been thicker for about the last six months. This is also because I am getting better at dealing with all of this as stress definitely doesn't help hair growth in my experience! Eat well, sleep lots, relax in ways you enjoy (walking and yoga for me). Find an understanding hairdresser who can help you to keep an eye on things for you too. Good luck with everything.
Thanks for your comment FranR. I am not looking forward to some surgery on suspected bccs on my lower eyelid and around my right eye next month. I hope the op goes ahead as it was cancelled in November as it's grown so I know it needs to get sorted. I didn't realize you could get bcc on your eyelid but apparently it's quite common. I wonder if anyone else has had this op done.
Thanks Dogs are the best . Have a good end of 2020 and all the best for 2021. X
