My husband just recently been told by GP that he probably has BCC on his nose , we are awaiting a hospital appointment (no date yet) but we are due to go on holiday in September and in October to 'sunny' destinations. I think we should cancel both our holidays but he still wants to go , what would those of you bravely going through this advise please ? I am so worried.
I would not worry just yet do not cancel. it may just be a case of getting it removed that is if it is a BCC , you will just be advised to cover this area, and how to protect your skin from sun. A BCC is one of the milder forms of skin cancer and soon as it is removed if needed, that's usually it. I would go ahead until told otherwise. It may not be as bad as you may think.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for your reply Marie89 . I think it is the 'unknown' and with it being on his nose I am worried about it being further exposed in the sun because he can not obviously cover it completely but he has now started using spf50 , previously he did use spf30. Many thanks again for your reply.
Has it been long ago from u contacted Your GP....if so follow it up. Your right to be concerned. just don't cancel anything until you see what they have to say at hospital. Hope all works out .
Hi
Did you already have travel insurance cover before he was diagnosed? If so, I'd be inclined to wait until a bit nearer the time and then take your decision.
I'm a big believer that holidays are fantastic therapy so I wouldn't be in a hurry to cancel either.
Best wishes

Thank you for taking time to reply ...It is only a week since he saw the GP so very early days and all a bit of shock at the moment, he hasn't got a hospital appointment yet and reading other posts I don't think it will be coming through anytime soon. Know must be positive and just wait our turn .
Hello Barbara
We have annual travel insurance and it will cover our September holiday however our October holiday will not be covered because our insurance runs out at the end of September ,normally I just renew at that point and continue it for the next year. However with this diagnosis I understand I won't get cover for the October holiday with having the holiday booked already but tbh I am not concerned about that because my husband's health is more important. I did read somewhere that if you do declare BCC as pre-existing conditions on future travel insurance renewal we still may get cover for future holidays , would you know if this is the case ?
Thank you for taking the time to reply
Hello again
I think most insurers will recognise that BCCs are very slow growing, mostly very unlikely to spread, and have a great clear up rate. Hence they are not the kind of cancers that will necessitate air-lifting you home with an emergency medical crew and the air-equivalent of the blue lights and two tones.
I didn't have skin cancer but I did have thyroid cancer nearly 8 years ago now. I've always declared it and had it excluded from my travel insurance cover. I know that very little would happen that could cause me to either cancel a trip or need treatment as a result of the cancer so I'm happy to do that. You should of course talk to your doctors, but my guess is that they'll tell you that going without medical cover is unlikely to be risky. You will most likely still want cover for lost baggage, getting hit by a meteor or having an accident in your rental car.
Best wishes

Hi
I'm sorry I haven't been around these last couple of days so a belated welcome to the skin cancer group.
I would be very surprised if you were turned down for holiday cover if your husband's skin condition is a BCC. However, if your existing travel insurance requires this diagnosis to be declared then you could ask at the time of declaring it if there will be a problem renewing.
If your insurers will not insure you then there is a travel insurance group where you will find recommendations by fellow forum members for travel insurers who will give cover for people with pre-existing medical conditions.
Best wishes to both you and your husband
Hi. I understand your concern but I would not cancel yet. I had a BCC on both nose and chest. Biopsies done a week before I went on holiday to Mexico. I was nervous but Consultant was happy for me to go. I just had to use good sun protection and a hat (and try to avoid sitting in sun of course). She even used dissolving stitches so I would not have to worry about removal. I would wait and see when you get appts etc and just follow medical advice. I hope it all works out OK for you both.
Thank you so much for your advice I will definitely look further into this and thank you for TI group details.
