Totally speechless

So I had a GP appointment yesterday. In and out in about 3 minutes. Extent of conversation ‘It’s cancer. I’ll refer you to a dermatologist. You should hear within 2 weeks’. No preamble, no discussion, no other possibility offered. Too stunned to ask any questions. So I’ve spent most of the night googling BCC and SQC and only slightly reassured about likelihood of spread. How do I process this?

  • Hey

Welcome to the forum and can I just say I'm so sorry you were treated that way. While I think it's reasonable for a medical professional to be highly suspicious of cancer on the initial consultation and to communicate that to the patient, I think better could've been done in the way you were told this based on what you've described. I've had both melanoma and BCC (details of diagnosis and treatment are in my profile if you fancy a read) and I experienced similar treatment in the opposite scenario (i.e. I was told it was nothing) in the initial investigation stages into what turned out to be melanoma.

I've found that this part of the process is tricky for most people because there's basically nothing practical you can do except make sure you attend the appointment when it comes through. For me, the lack of control would make my mind go into overdrive trying to figure it out for myself and inevitably I'd end up reading all sorts on the internet.

To keep my mental health in check whilst playing the waiting game, I learned to only research info on reputable sites, talk to others who have been through or are going through the same like you are here as I think the experience can feel quite lonely otherwise, and try as much as possible to do normal every day things. I've found accepting that things are going to be up and down for a while is really helpful too rather than wishing the situation was different. All of this is obviously easier said than done and can definitely take some practice!

I hope you find the forum useful and feel free to ask any questions about my experience you think might be useful. Take care. x

  • Hi Mollieb

After being told my head lesion was nothing to worry about I eventually had a biopsy which showed an overlap of BCC/SCC. I had an excision and skin graft. I have eventually been told it was BCC but went through all the emotions you describe.
This is excellent advice from MsC19754c. I wish you well and be kind to yourself.
