Finding Mohs specialists and hospitals that offer Mohs surgery

Hi, I have recently been diagnosed with a BCC on the bridge of my nose, quite near my eye. Although my local hospital doesn't offer Mohs surgery, and didn't mention it, considering the position of my BCC, I am now wondering if Mohs surgery might be the better option for me. I would like to hear about other people's experience of Mohs surgery, and the hospitals and specialists who offer this type of surgery.

  • I am going to have mohs surgery next month but privately because the wait time locally is long and mine is infiltrative on my nose.

There is a list of qualified mohs surgeons available if you do a Google search. I think there are only about 50 in the country.

I was hoping to have a normal excision with a local dermatologist but needed the mohs because it is infiltrative.

Where is yours? Did you have a biopsy?

  • Hi, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post, but am in exactly the same position as you, with a suspected BCC on bridge of nose although I can feel it under the surface extending down either side of my nose. The biopsy which was done 9 days ago has left a huge dent and scab and looks awful. It's taken me well over a year and multiple appointments to get anyone to take me seriously. I even self referred to a private consultant who dismissed it. I have lost trust already although I fear my journey is only just beginning. I would also like to know how you find and choose a Mohs surgeon, if you are lucky enough to be offered Mohs on the NHS, can you choose someone who is a specialises on faces? The reconstructive surgery appears to take many forms from the videos I've seen, how can you find out which is the best for you, or at least have enough knowledge to ask intelligent questions? At the moment I'm like a rabbit in the headlights.

  • Thank you. That's useful and interesting, as the private consultant I've been in touch with and who is talked about as the local Mohs expert is not on this list! Have you chosen someone and do you have a date for your surgery?

  • I was doing research while I waited for my biopsy results. It was very confusing. I saw on a few private hospital websites about mohs but no-one was on the list.

I asked the dermatologist secretary who referral usually goes to locally and it was the same for NHS and private. He was on the list.

My mohs surgery is beginning of November and the Dr thinks he can avoid a pedicle flap which I was worried about. Can't do a straight closure as it will be too big. It is infiltrative. Should be able to do an advancement flap of another type. I have no idea really but keeping my fingers crossed. Won't know what is what until they find out how big it is. Just need to be ready to stay all day.

I'm very lucky having private insurance through my husband's work. I know NHS wait is a lot longer locally.

  • Good luck and I really hope it goes well. Your experiences to date sound similar to mine, I have been literally feeling my way in the dark and have only just found this forum. It's useful to speak to others in the same boat, and I've just noted pedicle flap and advancement flap as terms I might need to know! I think my BCC is infiltrative but I didn't even know that term until today. Still awaiting biopsy results - the biopsy was done by an oral maxillofacial surgeon who took away a huge chunk.

  • How is your biopsy site? My 2nd one is 7 days now and still quite sore. I needed a punch biopsy as well as the scrape because I had a rare type of bcc last time , basosquamous. I didn't realise at the time 14 years ago because they got it out in a quick excision

  • It was not great for first week, was very sore and sporadically bleeding, then looked infected so they cleaned it out and put me on antibiotics. It's now a lot better but a huge scab.

  • That's good that it's sorted. I don't think mine is infected but keeping an eye on it

  • Hi

I had mohs surgery in june to remove a BCC which was infilitrative on my cheek. I ended up paying privately i researched and found a clinic near me, who i must say was brilliant. I would still be waiting now on nhs list. I do not understand why drs etc seem to think these do not need treating quickly. What looked like a very small sore on my face, resulted in 20 stitched on my face. All healed well and the scar is gradually fading.

I hope you get sorted quickly..
