BCC - 2 month wait to surgery

Hello,

I was diagnosed with a BCC a few weeks ago. It's been growing for a year and a half now and before Christmas the area around the BCC was very painful, so I knew it was something.

I know this is the best skin cancer to have but I've just been told that surgery to remove it won't be for two months. I'm a bit concerned it could go deeper in that time and given where it is - it's on my cheek next to my nose - wonder if it could get into other areas? I've also had multiple skin changes since being on immunosuppressants.

Would greatly appreciate any reassurance that it isn't going to spread in that time? Or I wonder if I should try to get surgery sooner? Would be great to hear from anyone waiting that time period for initial extraction.

Thank you.

  • Hi

When I had a BCC removed it was done at the same time as having a suspect mole removed, so only about a month between seeing my consultant and having them removed.

I've attached this leaflet about BCC, from the British Association of Dermatologists, which will hopefully reassure you as regards the waiting time to have it removed. You'll see that it says

"BCCs rarely spread to other parts of the body. Therefore, although it is a type of skin cancer it is almost never a danger to life."

You could always give the hospital admissions team a call and tell them you can accept a cancellation, if you're in a position to do so, as that's one way of being seen sooner.

  • Thanks, Latchbrook, I'll have a look.

I'm not worried about the cancer side of it, more the destruction it can do in the meantime. Because I had a lot of pain around the area and the fact it's been growing for a year and a half (and is in the middle of my face), my concern is the longer it's left, whilst continuing to grow, the more damage it'll cause. It is only still tiny, but becoming more cone-like, and I just don't want to have a more extensive operation because it's gone deeper.

I'm not feeling great about this op. If it was anywhere else, I'd not worry. I've just been through a lot of illness and am very scarred from that, so I'm struggling with this middle-of-face op.

  • Ah, I see. Sorry, I misread your post and thought your were worried about the chance of it spreading while waiting for the op.

    ((hugs))

  • No! Don't apologise! That's so kind of you to send it. It prompted me Google images of how BCC grows, and I understand it mostly stays in the top layers.

I've just had such a hard time recognising myself after all other illness, I'm struggling with the thought of this. And how much they'll have to take. Though, I do realise I'm incredibly lucky it's a BCC.

Did they get all of yours? Hope you're doing well now.

  • My BCC was on my chest and was completely removed. The plastic surgeon who did it had a lovely bedside manner, probably because he specialised in children's surgery, and we had a good old chat to keep my mind off what he was doing. I can't even find the scar now.

  • Oh, that's good to hear. I'm glad you healed well, too.

I had a suspected melanoma removed last summer from my chest, and the scar is fairly prominent, but I do scar easily, and nothing to do with the surgeon. Actually, it was more my breast, and kept pulling, so that probably opened it up... I'll just have to stay stone-faced for months till this one heals!
