Hi everyone

I am new to this group. I have just been diagnosed with bcc side of my nose.  I have had it for about 9 months now which i thought was just a spot.  I am  now to wait for surgery. I am scared  if it has spread to the bone of nose. My thoughts are all over the place. I am worried sick. I am 36 years old. Does anyone have any advice on same situation as me?

How was surgery?

Did it leave scar?

Did they have to cut across face or was it small cut?

Could it spread to bone after 8 months?

Sorry all questions.

Thank you Blush

  • Hi, also waiting surgery on my nose tip but just to the right of it. I have mine since at least Dec when first went doctor and consultant thinks not that deep. Bcc is usually slow growing as I've been told and unusual to spread. Try not to worry. I know it's hard as I find it's a worry especially as you look at it everyday. Can't say re scars but my biopsy healed well . I wish you well and if need to chat am here. Lots of helpful people on this group.

  • Hi

Thank you so much for your comment appreciate it. Yes i think its the waiting that makes me more anxious. I hope you're surgery also goes well.

  • Hi Kay 88  I understand your concerns and if I say dont worry I know you will.  I was in the same position as you 2 years ago.  I had 2 bcc's one at the very side of my nostril on my face and another under my eye right up to the tear duct.  I had the one near my nostril a while and thought this "thing" isnt going so went to gp's eventually when they would see me!! Dermatologist took one look and said I needed plastic surgery and referred me to a fantastic plastic surgeon.  I mentioned the one under my eye as thought my glasses had rubbed me he did biopsy on that when he was doing the surgery on the other one, and this was also a bcc.  I had the first one done first with skin flap surgery under local anaesthetic and once injections were done didnt feel anything.  The other I had done about 8 weeks later with a skin graft, same procedure with local anaesthetic.  I was concerned when stitches and dressings were removed as looked unsightly, but at 73 as I was then not too bothered and we were still wearing masks which I could hide behind.  The surgeon assured me all would be well, and it was.  Now people say they cant even see where it was.  I know, but then I use a 5x magnifying mirror to do my makeup which shows up all your flaws.  I never used a sun bed, never sunbathed always used sun cream and I got 2 and will possibly get more I am told.  I use Factor 50 suncream every single day now before I put my make up on and am a bit paranoid in the summer months, especially when on holiday, but only go to Cornwall.  The cuts are small but lots of stitches as plastic surgeons uselots of tiny stitches to minimise scars.  I had them done privatelty as NHS waiting lists were long for this type of surgery. Where do you live.  Please keep in touch and I will answer any concerns you have, as I was just the same as you and this group were amazing.  Always someone willing to help you.  Good luck xx

  • Hi

Thank you so much for your message it really does help my worries. Did you go private for all of your procedures? The one on your nose sounds similar to mine as right on the side of nostril. They told me I would need skin graft on nose which is making me more anxious. Was the skin graft on your nose?

    Thank you Blush

  • yes I went private for them all.  The skin flap was the one right by my nostril and the one under my eye was skin graft taken from the side of my face near my ear.  You will be fine, trust me. It all sounds much worse than it is when it actually happens. Mine was right by the side of the fatty piece of your nostril and on my face too.  It looked like a small grain of rice and the top kept coming off and bleeding.  Where do you live as hospital waiting times are different in different areas.  Is a plastic surgeon doing it or dermatologist.  Do you work as if I was younger and at work, I wouldnt have wanted to go for a few weeks.  It isnt painful after. I took paracetamol as soon as I got home, took it easy that day obvioulsy and took paracetamol the next day and that was all.  Ask me anything here to help you through it xx

  • Thank you means so much. I live in Liverpool. They explained that I would need surgery and then plastics for skin graft.

They said it would be after Xmas.

Yes I am 3rd year student nurse. So am hoping am not waiting to long before surgery as I start back at uni mid January.

I was thinking of going private but unsure where to start an cost.

Hoping it's not to long for nhs waitPray

  • Will my nose be covered for a few weeks I'm bandages or anything? So I can maybe hide it if I have to work or placement with uni.

    Thank you for your support

  • No you will have stitches and a dressing for 7 days, my dressing fell off within 2 days Consultant told me this would happen with eating. When stitches were out I had nothing on it. If I had been at work I wouldnt have liked to go as it did look a bit gungy and red and I would worry about infection.  When it had healed and after my 5 week check with Consultant I had to massage it quite hard with either vaseline or bio oil which I did whilst watching tv . This helped massively with healing and scaring.  The host site at the side of my face was no problem whatsoever. Hope you dont have to wait too long. Did they not give you an idea when it would be. xx

  • Aw hopefully mine is a fast recovery.

Yes the consultant said it would be after Xmas so am thinking am going to wait 4 weeks till surgery. I will keep you updated.

Thank you for your support really appreciate itBlush

  • Hi

I had a BCC removed from side of my nose just over two years ago. It had been there well over a year to my knowledge.... I was told that they usually grow very slowly..   I asked about MOHS but both the dermatologist/mohs surgeon and the head and neck surgeon agreed that normal excision would be fine... it was a ten month wait for mohs. About five months for excision.   The head and neck surgeon did the surgery..I was terrified so given the choice of reconstruction or letting it heal by secondary intention. I chose the latter which has left a scar...   in hindsight reconstruction would have left a much finer scar...   the bcc was about six mm and they took a four inch margin...   it wasn't painful at all and was completely healed in six weeks..when they do reconstruction they usually extend the wound so they can make a finer scar..

It's normal to be terrified but you'll find everyone on here will be happy to answer your questions so ask us anything.... we've all been there....
