Hello, I had a punch biopsy three weeks ago and the Dr called back today to tell me it’s a basal cell carcinoma. It’s on my scalp and the Dr said although it is very slow growing it must be removed. In Ipswich where I live the wait time is apparently 3-4 months. With everything going on in the NHS I am worried that the wait might be substantially longer and I’m thinking about going privately. Does anyone have experience of having a bcc on scalp removed either privately or on the NHS? My bcc is about 1cm by 1cm and I’m told that I will need a skin graft and the hair will not grow back . I’m quite concerned about that too!
Hi Caro65 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll both find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I can understand your concern that the 3-4 months normal wait for a BCC to be removed might become longer in the current climate.
I haven't had a BCC removed from my scalp, so can't share any experiences around that, but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list.
I've had a look in the group and found this thread that you might find helpful to read. You could reply to any of the posters if you wanted to ask any questions.
It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Many thanks for this lovely post. I found Phenom’s post really encouraging. I have booked a consultation for next week and hope to have the operation by the end of January. I am very fortunate to be able to go private. Now that the news of the diagnosis has sunk in I just feel very relieved it’s not worse.
Hi
Hi there,
I had a bcc removed from my scalp and a skin graft. I do have a reasonable sized scar as it was quite a large bcc and therefore have hair loss to the area.
I worried for a while how I would cover it, the scar did improve with healing but I do still have a bald patch. This was over a year ago now, I’ve changed my parting and feel better about wearing my hair down now. I think when it settles you will find a way of managing it, I’ve also become less concerned in what people will think if they catch a glimpse of it. Good luck with your surgery x
