I’ve recently had a squamous cell carcinoma removed from my forehead. I have been told to make sure in future I wear a high sun factor sun screen if I go out in the sun (as well as a broad brimmed hat and uv protective sunglasses). I thought at first that it meant if I go out on a hot day maybe between 10am and 4pm. But I recently read that I should be wearing sun screen anytime I am in the sun. Does that mean even on cold days in the winter or at 8am in the summer? Just wondering what advice anyone else in a similar position had been given.
Hi Birdy26 I had 2 skin cancers removed from my face 2 years ago. The advice from my plastic surgeon was I have to use Factor 50 suncream every day from March until the end of Novemberm even if I am hanging the washing out. Think you will find one or two of us on this site hate the sun with a passion now, I use No 7 special facial sun cream Factor 50 on top of my normal moisturiser and if wearing make up I use a Factor 50 foundation I was always very careful with sun protection, never been a sun worshipper but now I am paranoid about being in the sun, I weat a hat and sunglasses and more often than not long sleeved t shirts. I am very careful as I have been told once you have had one of these skin cancers you are prone to getting more and I have had 2 nasty ones Sorry to bring you bad news but afraid if I were you I would play safe and wear the Factor 50. I think I am going to carry on and use it every day as today started off dull and became quite sunny, Good Luck and keep in touch xx
Hi Harlyn and thanks for your very helpful response. I know now I have been very lax about wearing sunscreen and never wear factor 50. I run in the morning about 3 times a week and never bothered with anything on my head or sunscreen. Being a man it will be quite a change for me to apply cream on my face every time I go
outside but if that is what it takes to stay healthy there is no other choice. I may even have to consider running in a gym instead of outside. Look after yourself. Birdy26
Hi birdie26
I've been advised by my surgeon to wear factor50 after having a basal cell removed from nose. Like harlyn I use boots 50.. I love hiking but hate the sun now..... I wear the sun block sunglasses hat and cover up... although I love hiking I do now avoid being out in the sun as much as possible..... once you've had one skin cancer you're a lot more prone to getting more so sun protection is essential

Hi Puckettyboo
Like you, I like hiking and in fact I've been thinking that some of the long treks I have done abroad over the years may have contributed to my skin problems. I always wore some form of head cover but perhaps I didn't pay enough attention to sunscreen. Now using factor50 when I go out and wear uv400 sun glasses. I've also invested in broad brimmed hats for different occasions. In fact I found a wide brimmed Tilley hat in a charity shop today for £3. Absolute bargain.
