Skin graft on face

Hi everyone,

Just I had a skin graft on my face to remove a SCC quite close to my eye , so far so good as pleased as I could be with a scar on my face.

i had a follow up conversation with a doctor, I was not expecting any problems, to be told they’d  like to offer me radiotherapy as they didn’t get the usual margins

to say I was shocked was an understatement, couldn’t get my head round it , i definitely asked the consultant to put it in a letter as I’d have forgotten by the time I got home! He said he would, but still very anxiously chasing the letter.

has anyone else had this treatment on their face  , I’ve  learnt about the mold  you have made etc,

what I  trying to do is way up the pros and cons to make a decision, at the time I said  no ,  it feel not that I’m changing my mind but my decision should be an informed one ,

As everyone says it’s the waiting for the nest step that gets you most.

need to have a rough idea of %risk approx if have no treatment, and same for without treatment, is there anyway they could test to see if they left some behind(I understand how this could  happen) sound sort of like a belt and braces job .

Are you more susceptible to cancer if this is the 3nd time you’ve had it etc ?, not sure I can cope with more surgery.

sorry if I’m not making any sense, please tell me if that’s the case

Wishing you all a good day , pouring with rain here .

  • Hi

I don't have any experience with radiotherapy treatment for SCC but noticed that you hadn't had any replies. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list.

I don't know if this will help you make your decision on whether to have it or not, but this is the leaflet produced by the British Association of Dermatologists about radiotherapy for skin cancer.

Hopefully you'll have received the information you asked for from your consultant by now.

Wishing you all the best with whatever you decide to do.

  • Hi

I can understand the shock when they said they hadnt cleared all the scc. Can they not just go back in to remove it?

I understand how hard ut is i also had basal cell removed from my face and was stitched right into the corner of my inner eye..but they got it all out by mohs syrfery.

Did you have exvision. I dont know about radiotherapy however i would take what the consultant advises.

    Take care

  • Hi Briars  I have had 2 basal cell cancers removed from my face by skin flap and skin graft not Mohs surgery just excision.  Luckily they did wide enough margins, but if they hadn't my Consultant said they would go in again and do a wider excision. Radiotherapy was mentioned by dematologist in the very beginning but when mentioned to my plastic surgeron he said NO you are too young 73 !!!. So wonder if they leave radiotherapy for later should it be needed,  I was told once you have one you are prone to more.  I have had 2 so far a third on my scalp was biopsied and was a pillar cyst, but I am continually checking myself as feel I will have more as very fair skinned, although dont sun bath.  Good Luck xx

  • Thank you Harlyn ,

that’s a big help , I’ll ask about mobs surgery and see if an option.

so good to speak to someone have the same place as it all seems different.

just learnt a bit more info, my margin taken was only 0.5mm , I think Nora, they like is between 4-6mm , so to me it looks as if they didn’t get much of a margin .

    thanks again Harlyn

  • Thank you cockerpoo67 am looking into it every bit of information is good my margin was only 0.5 mm
