My partner has just been diagnosed with suspected appendiceal mucinous tumour with concern for PMP(appendix cancer) and is awaiting cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC at Christie’s hospital.
It’s only been two weeks and the surgery is planned for the end of July, I’m really struggling with it as I hate change and I’m scared of what’s the future going to be like for both of us.
im scared I’m not going to be strong enough to get through it all, he’s my absolute world. I’m trying to be positive for him but each day I feel worse with anxiety and dread,
any help or advice would be greatly recieved xx
Hi....I am a Christie patient. Surgery in July 2022. Try not to overthink things...easier said than done I know. Also suggest speaking to your GP......mine prescribed Sertraline which helps with anxiety. Also, try and get your partner to eat as much protein as possible before surgery....and get as fit as possible .......I was walking 10,000 steps a day before surgery. You may want to join the UK charity FB group as there are lots of members who are Christie patients and they will give you support

Thank you for the reply, I have spoke to my gp and I’m trying to get him to get fit for it but I think with the stress of it all being so new only 2 weeks of knowing it’s still sinking in and I’ve read some horror stories of what complications people have experienced but I’m going to keep them to myself so not to worry him more

Hi.....yes two weeks is very early days. Who is your consultant at The Christie. My Consultant is Mr Paul Sutton. Don't read or rely on Dr Google.....it's out of date and unreliable. The Pseudomyxoma Survivor is a great group for modern and up to date information. Well worth joining.
He is under professor Aziz I’ve read up on him and he sounds like the man, it’s all just a bit daunting right now, I’m going to see if we can go away for a week before his op to make some memories and have a bit of a break from it, it’s on my mind all the time. Any other advice like will he need anything when he gets home or how long roughly before he starts to feel better? He hates being off work but I don’t want him rushing back too soon as this is what he usually does.
Everybody recovers differently and depends on age, organs removed etc etc. In terms of recovery, most people take at least 3 months to 6 months to recover. Prior to surgery, he might need to have vaccinations for pneumonia and meningitis as a precaution for spleen being removed.
