Hello there, first post today at the 7 month mark of my radical prostatectomy. Only 55, had no symptoms just took a home PSA test on a whim, thank god I did as it was T3a with a Gleason score of 7. Had 2 follow up PSA tests so far, both at 0.03 so all going well I thought, decided on a whim once more to take a home (sent off to lab) PSA test which has just come back at 0.24, devastated is an understatement. I’m trying to get an NHS test asap to confirm, hope the lab made an error but I fear the cancer is back. Anyone out there with the same experience, any confidence in Randox labs?
Hi Bruce and welcome.
Hopefully it is cos a different lab doing a test could produce a different result.
As you have said get a NHS PSA test asap just to see, hopefully will be back to your original figure.
If not then probably salvage Radiotherapy may be necessary to finish it off.
Still potentially curable anyway.
Best wishes
Steve
Bruce, 0.06 is still a very impressive PSA result. I've never heard of Randox before.
Earlier on this year I had my PSA done at my GP, and then at the hospital 3 weeks later. The results were totally different.
Allegedly if you have sex before you get your PSA done it can dramatically increase your score. It would be nice to be able to have sex at any time, never mind before a PSA test! That's E.D. for you!
Take Care

Hey Steve, Randox supply finger prick type blood tests, they’re supposed to be reputable but were wildly off on this occasion. Fingers crossed the next test drops, it’s just concerning as the NHS result doubled in 3 months, with no prostate that’s not supposed to happen….well in my head it isn’t!
Hello Bruce (Bruce )
A belated welcome to the group. I have been following this thread but not put finger to keyboard until now. A few of points.
* My team advise me against having any PSA tests (even the GP's) as they stick to one laboratory and you have consistency.
* Yes you are correct - without a prostate your expected PSA should be zero. However various other tissues and organs in the body do produce trace amounts of PSA.
* After your surgery and you had a meeting with your team, did they discuss your histology with you? In a nut shell (no pun intended) they check the prostate in the lab and look at the margins to see if the cancer may have spread. Did they say you have "clear margins"?
Good luck with your next test in 3 months time.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi Stevecam,
Whenever I have my annual GP blood test I always ask if they can add in one for PSA as well & it's always higher than the 6 monthly one from the hospital. never compare the 2 against each other but does give me an interim idea as to what is happening.
Funnily enough I now have this vision of guys going to the hospital or GP & having sex just before their appointment for the bloods to be taken .
Best Wishes
Brian
Hello Brian,
Thanks for your insight.
Yes, I was advised against taking tests outside the NHS, but got a bit spooked and decided I needed to check mid-way between tests......bad idea!
I wasn't aware other tissues/organs produced PSA, that's very interesting will need to get AI to give me some info around that.
Pathology reported clear margins but with early signs of spread along the nerves. The urologist was very confident that they had removed it all and just in time......it's the 'just in time' bit that stuck in my head as it was T3A.
Cheers.
Hi Bruce, I remember you.
So ,good news really, a lot better than the . 24.
.06 still very low, next test will be crucial me thinks, as you don't want it showing a steady increase obviously.
Needs to stay under .1
Fingers crossed will be
Best wishes
Steve
