Hello, I’m a newbie here who has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I thought it would be a good idea to get the thoughts/views of other people here on living with cancer treatment. I have just started on hormone tablets and will be having radiology.

  • Hi Dave and welcome

It would be good if u could post some stats cos can help with any advice

PSA, Gleeson, MRI report or TNM staging.

I had Radiotherapy in 2017 and found it fairly easy to contend with.

    Any questions please ask

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Hello Dave (

Welcome to the group although I am so sorry to find you joining us.

So the basic idea behind your treatment is the Hormone Therapy removes your testosterone (the cancer's food) and after 4-6 months of the cancer cells being starved - the Radiotherapy kills the cancer cells off - simple!!

There are side effects but we don't all get them all - all I would suggest is you try and keep as fit as possible as one of the main side effects is fatigue.

If you can add the details of your journey to date to your profile, this would help us to help you. To do this on your home page click on the chair - top right, then "profile" then "edit" - you can then add your PSA, Gleason and TNM scores. Once you've done that don't forget to click on save. You can read other Community Member's profiles by clicking on their user name or avatar.

Feel free to ask any questions - nothing is too trivial.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

The only test result that I have is a psa reading of 33. This was done at a North Wales charity event. They sent my results to my doctor who was very dismissive and questioned why I had the test in the first place. They agreed to send me for another test which came back at 33.4. They then sent me to urology for more tests. CT scan, biopsy and MRI. I am now waiting for a full body bone scan which is due next week.

I am really glad I went for the first test even though I didn’t have any symptoms. Hopefully it’s now been caught in time.

  • Hi Brian

Thanks for replying and for the information. My biggest concern/worry at the moment is the fatigue. I am very active and like nothing better than a walk in the Welsh hills.

    Cheers

    Dave

  • Ok Dave, your GP Def doesn't sound that helpful.

U say you are having a bone scan but have U already had the MRI and biopsy but still waiting on results?

    Steve

  • Hello Dave (

I've had over 3 years HT and radiotherapy and although I have had fatigue I have never missed a day at work or let it get to me.

I am in the Pennine foothills, leave our house left is up right is down - when the fatigue kicked in I just took the dog for an extra walk!!

As we say in Lancashire - 'thal be rete!!

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian
I am also a Lancashire lad born and bred (but not for a while), so I know we’re made of tough stuff.

    Cheers

  • Hi Steve

You are correct, my GP just wasn’t interested at all. My Urologist has had all the scan and biopsy results to be able to say that that the cancer was localised and hadn’t spread. Hence the course of treatment he has recommended.

    Dave

  • Ok Dave, in my mind that's the most important thing really, contained in the gland, easier to treat and Def potentially curable.

Good that you've started on HT.

    All the best

    Steve
