New to the site, not to the problem !!

This is my first post on this site, just thought I'd add my story, we all have such different journeys.

I was diagnosed in Sept 2017 (when aged 65) and had a radical prostatectomy very soon afterwards, within 2 months. Unfortunately cancer cells were left behind and I had six weeks of daily radiotherapy in Feb 2018 followed by 2 years on Bicalutamide.

The result was undetectable PSA up to the 5th anniversary of the surgery (!), at which point PSA started rising, albeit in small amounts (ie. 0.2 then a jump to 1.6 and 2.2). I had 2 PET scans and the outcome was shown to be an attachment to the aortocaval lymph node, and I was told that this was now diagnosed as oligometastatic disease. I had further radiotherapy (stereotactic) after taking bicalutamide for 12 months to reduce the size of the cell, as it was attached to the duodenum and deemed unsafe to attack, in order to avoid bowel perforation.

Again the result was undetectable PSA until earlier this year when the PSA had started to rise again, and as before, starting at a low level, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.7 currently (three monthly blood tests). I am awaiting the regular consultant meeting shortly to discuss the next step which I think maybe HT.

I also did have lots of bladder issues post op and ended up with an AUS fitted, for which I have been eternally grateful.

So it has been something of a long slog, but I am still here !! One thing of great importance is the support I have had from my wife, we have shared the rollercoaster over the years.

  • Hi  - well, what a story so far … and you have avoided HT too! However, I have a feeling that will be your next step. AW

  • Hello

A warm welcome to the group, although I am so sorry to find you here. Yes, as you say we all have a very different journey (you can read mine and many other Community member's journey by clicking on their name or avatar).

You appear to have a decent team looking after you and I wish you well with your next Consultants meeting.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi  different story but some similar bits.  Certainly a rollercoaster and I also have been fully supported by my wife.  As you can see by my name also started this journey in 2017 - here’s to another 8 years. Wink

    Best wishes, David
